To commend virtuous actions and encourage more people to be inspired by their examples, Supreme Master Ching Hai has lovingly created a series of awards, including the Shining World Leadership Award, Shining World Compassion Award, Shining World Hero and Heroine Awards, Shining World Honesty Award, Shining World Protection Award, Shining World Intelligence Award, and Shining World Inventor Award, to recognize some of the most exemplary, generous, caring, and courageous people who walk amongst us.

Today, we will meet an amazing billionaire from China, Mr. Chen Guangbiao, and learn about his long and remarkable journey in philanthropy. Known as “the kindest person in China,” Mr. Chen Guangbiao is the president of Jiangsu Huangpu Recycling Resources in China. Every year, he gives more than 50% of the profits earned from this green industry to the less fortunate. When giving financial aid to the recipients, he always gives them a respectful 90-degree bow.

In 2010, southwestern China suffered a serious drought, which left the ground cracked and rivers dried. Chen Guangbiao had 5,300 tons of water brought to the area, to help with crop irrigation and to comfort the anxious hearts of the people.

I’ve decided to donate another 12 million in cash through the Red Cross in China and the China Charity. I will not stop until 200 wells are dug.

In April 2010, an earthquake brought catastrophe to Yushu City in Qin Hai province. As an honorary citizen of Yushu City, Chen Guangbiao led the Huangpu earthquake relief team to the disaster site on the very same day.

Previously, on May 12, 2008 when the Sichuan Earthquake occurred, Mr. Chen Guangbiao was in a board meeting. He immediately turned the meeting into an earthquake relief operation meeting. Within a few hours, his relief team was headed to the disaster zone and was the first non-governmental group to arrive.

At the disaster site, Mr. Chen Guanbiao gave instructions to make roads to transport relief materials and injured people. He personally carried over 200 victims.

You are a conscientious and compassionate entrepreneur who is concerned about the disaster areas. I salute you.

I just did what I was supposed to do.

Chen Guangbiao has inspired other wealthy Chinese citizens to also participate in charity endeavors.

When I was little, my family was poor. When I was four years old, I had an older brother and an older sister who died of hunger. I wished someone would help us. When I went to elementary school, my parents had to borrow money from different families to pay tuition for me. In summer vacation, I used to carry water to a town two kilometers away from home to sell. I charged one penny for a drink.

Using that money, Mr. Chen paid not only his own but his classmates’ tuition fees as well. He picked up trash and sold it after school to pay for decent bedding for a friend. Thus, at the tender age of nine, he knew what charity was – and the happiness he could bring to others – without even knowing the word for it. His selflessness is deeply rooted in his family.

One day during the harvest season, we had some wheat laying in the yard to dry, but at noon a storm came. My mom was supposed to lead us to take back the wheat. In the end, when the rain came down, my mom ran to other people’s yard to help them to take back the wheat, leaving our own wheat getting wet. Also, whenever there was a beggar passing by our house at lunch time, my parents, would ask him/her to come in to eat with us at the table.

Through the influence of his parents, Chen Guangbiao also tries to pass such good traditions and teachings to the next generation. His son is very proud of him and his wife supports his charitable deeds wholeheartedly. His son Chen Youbiao once wrote these words in a published article, titled, “My Father’s Donation and My Future”:

“My mom has been supporting my father behind the scene quietly. When my parents discussed the decision of donating all of their possessions, I voted yes without a second thought. If a person lives only for himself, he is normal and trivial; if a person lives for his country, the society and others, no doubt he is noble and great. I am very proud that my father belongs to the latter. He is the guiding light for a lot of people, including myself.”

Chen Guangbiao started his business from nothing. His success comes from his diligence and constant effort. From making a penny to 70 billion RMB, Chen Guangbiao felt grateful and wanted to give back to help more children from disadvantaged areas to have a better life.

His heart is easily touched by children and he takes action when his heart is touched, which is most precious. His actions have brought smiles to the faces of thousands of children.

When I go home, I will make my business more successful and make more money. Then, I will come back to help your school. Is that okay?

The charity work of Chen Guangbiao has covered the whole globe, responding to the tsunami in Southeast Asia, earthquakes in Japan, Italy, Chile, and Haiti, as well as Typhoon Morakot in Formosa (Taiwan).

He has made such great contributions to the country, the society and the people.

If charity is the first commitment of Chen Guangbiao, then environmental protection is his second mission since the last few years. In March 2011, Chen Guangbiao was invited as a special guest to attend the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. During the conference, he proposed the implementation of the concept of environmental protection to the products of daily life. To promote environmental protection, his whole family has changed their names.

Cherished viewers of Supreme Master TV, I will introduce the four members of my family. I am Chen Guang Biao. My nickname is Chen Di Tang (Low Carbon). I have two children, one is called Chen Huan Bao (Protecting the Environment), the other is called Chen Huan Jin (Environment). My wife is called Lu Se (Green). We have “low carbon emission,” “environmental protection,” and “green” in our family.

Mr. Chen Guangbiao believes that a person has three mothers: Mother Earth, the mother country and the birth mother. Apart from managing the environmental protecting company, Chen Guangbiao is very supportive of organic farming and the low-carbon footprint plant-based diet.

We should be as grateful and kind to the Earth as we are to our own mother. I think investing in the organic business is the best way to protect the environment in the body. I also suggest to people to eat more vegetarian food, and to walk more. Eating more vegetarian and walking more are good for the health and can help prolong life. Each one has the responsibility to lower their carbon footprint and protect the environment.

Not only does Chen Guangbiao love humans, he also is a friend to animals.

Each one of us has the responsibility to take care of the weak ones among us, which is the most important thing, but also to take care of the lovely animals, such as the dogs and cats. Yes! They are living beings. We should not hunt and kill the wild animals.

In 2010, Mr. Chen Guangbiao responded to the “Giving Pledge” campaign initiated by US billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, which encourages the world's ultra-rich to give half of their fortunes to charity. Mr. Chen declared that he will donate not just half, but all his wealth to charity when he leaves this world. For his benevolent decision, Supreme Master Ching Hai honored Mr. Chen Guangbiao with the Shining World Compassion Award.
