Greetings bright viewers.
In recent years, countries
across the globe have
been quickly adopting
smoke-free policies to
safeguard the well-being
of their citizens.
In Jordan, a bold tobacco
control policy has been
implemented since 2009.
The legislation, called
the Public Health Law,
went into full force
on May 25, 2010.
Through the enforcement
of the law, the air has
remained smoke-free and
clear in public places,
including hospitals,
schools, cinemas,
libraries, public buildings,
public transport vehicles,
airports, restaurants, etc.
Anyone who is caught
smoking in a prohibited
place may be fined
15-25 Jordanian dinars
(US$21-35).
Severe cases such as
smoking in a pre-school
may result in
imprisonment
for a term of one week
to one month.
We are doing a lot to
improve our habits
especially with
the smoking, and
we have rules for this.
And we are going to stop
the smoking in Jordan.
And I hope we are now
preparing many things
to improve our habit,
to improve our rules
to stop the smoking.
Inshallah (God willing).
According to Jordanian
Health Ministry statistics,
smoking afflicts
approximately one third
of adults in the country.
Each year, 35 million
dinars (approximately
US$50 million) are spent
by consumers
on tobacco products.
The nation’s
smoking-related
medical expenses amount
to almost the same cost.
Moreover, the study
shows that two-thirds of
Jordanian children
are exposed to
second-hand smoke,
which is proven to be
even more harmful
than smoking itself.
Further, smoking rates
among young people also
have been high in Jordan.
An estimated one-fifth
of Jordanian children
between ages 13-18
are smokers.
Jordanian Minister
of Health Dr. Nayef
Al-Fayez expressed
his deep concern for the
health of his co-citizens.
In fact, smoking is
a very harmful habit
in terms of
health and finance.
So, it must be
kept under control.
In fact, we’ve got laws
on the subject of
smoking; we will apply
all the regulations
concerning it.
Cancers caused by
smoking cost a lot
as well as smoking.
So, in the future,
we are going to stop
this bad habit. Inshallah.
Aiming to reduce
smoking among
the young population,
the ministry initiated
a campaign by
printing 10,000 posters
publicizing
the Public Health Law,
which prohibits
tobacco sales to
persons under age 18.
The posters are distributed
to shop owners, and
the ministry inspectors
carry out follow-up visits
to make sure the law
is followed by all people.
I wish
for all young people to
stay away from smoking.
It is a bad habit.
In fact,
it is a harmful habit.
Smoking is the main
cause of lung cancer,
which has killed
many people.
Especially
in the last few years,
the number of cancer
patients has increased.
This indicates that
we need to make laws;
we have made actually
a smoking ban law
and we need to apply it
as quick as possible.
When we return, we’ll
find out more about
the smoke-free policy
initiated by Jordan’s
Health Ministry headed
by His Excellency
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez,
honored recipient of
the Shining World
Leadership Award.
Please stay tuned to
Supreme Master
Television.
Welcome back to
our program featuring
the honored Shining
World Leadership Award
recipient, His Excellency
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez,
Jordan’s distinguished
Minister of Health.
Jordan’s comprehensive
smoking ban is just
one of the means of
the Health Ministry to
discourage people
from smoking.
The ministry also
cooperates with
the Education Ministry
and an anti-smoking
nongovernmental
organization to educate
young people about
the hazards of smoking.
Together, they have held
lectures for children
of ages 10 and above,
encouraging them to
play sports and manage
their pocket money.
For those who are already
addicted to smoking,
the Ministry of Health
provides consultations
and free
nicotine substitutes.
The result has been quite
encouraging among those
who participated
in the program.
For smokers,
smoking cessation is
sometimes
a little bit not easy.
But we have to start.
That is, we’ll start,
inshallah (God willing),
smoking cessation,
to stop this bad habit
which causes harm
in terms of
health and finance.
As reported by
the Amman n ewspaper,
“The Star,”
such an anti-smoking law
has been welcomed
by the citizens.
One non-smoker said,
“I think it’s great that
we finally have a law that
bans smoking
in public places.
It’s really awful to inhale
all that smoke and
it makes a lot of people
uncomfortable to be
in foggy closed places
where everyone smokes
cigarettes or argeelah
(smoking device).”
At the 56th session of
the World Health
Organization’s (WHO)
Regional Committee for
the Eastern Mediterranean,
Jordan was recognized
by the United Nations
agency for
her smoke-free efforts.
Jordanian Health
Minister Nayef Al-Fayez,
who is also head of
the country’s delegation
for the 56th session,
accepted the award.
For his visionary efforts
in establishing
a smoke-free society to
promote the health of
his co-citizens,
Supreme Master Ching Hai
honored
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez
with the Shining World
Leadership Award.
The award presentation
ceremony was honorably
attended by
the Jordanian ambassador
to the United Nations
and several other officials.
The following is
an excerpt of the letter of
appreciation addressed to
His Excellency from
Supreme Master Ching Hai.
“Your Excellency,
It is with great pleasure
and gratitude that
we present to Jordan
the Shining World
Leadership Award.
This Award is presented
in recognition of
your landmark legislation
to reduce smoking and
promote the health and
wellbeing of the citizens.
Your visionary and
courageous stance is
having a beneficial effect
domestically and is also
helping other states
to join the assembly of
noble nations
fighting tobacco addiction.
Jordan’s new cabinet…
took the first step
towards a new
clean-aired country
announcing that
smoking in public places
such as the airport, malls
and tourist-related
restaurants was banned
from March 2009.
For excellent governance,
for inspiring
constructive change
towards a healthier world,
and for being a dedicated
and noble role model,
we hereby a1pplaud and
celebrate the great deeds
of Jordan and
the esteemed Minister of
Health, Your Excellency
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez.
With Great Honour,
Love and Blessings,
Supreme Master
Ching Hai”
Thank you,
thank you very much.
Thank you.
Along with the letter,
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez
was also presented
a crystal plaque and
other gifts, including
Supreme Master Ching Hai’s
#1 international
bestselling books,
CDs, DVDs,
and vegan chocolates.
Awesome!
Thank you very much.
You’re very welcome.
It’s my pleasure
and responsibility
in Jordan to do this work,
and we are going
to forbid the cigarettes
in all the places
as well as in the traffic,
and buses as well as
in the trains.
And we are going
to forbid in the malls
and all the governmental
places. And we started
on 25th of May
to force all the people –
don’t smoke at all.
This is starting from
25th of May.
(That’s great.)
Thank you very much
for your presents.
Thank you.
As rising temperatures
pose serious threats to
human health,
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez also
spoke of the importance
of implementing
environmental protection
and mitigation measures.
We are taking steps
ahead in this field
so that we can educate
these people in regard to
the seriousness of these
problems which
endangers, as you say,
human health.
In fact, we have to put
regulations and laws to
improve the environment
and reduce the human
health risk in this society.
Thank you.
Peace be upon you.
Peace be upon you,
God bless.
Our salute and
respectful appreciation,
Your Excellency
Dr. Nayef Al-Fayez,
the caring Ministry
of Health, and Jordan
for your proactive
and determined actions
to improve the lives
of your people.
May your measures
continue to be successful
as countries everywhere
likewise work towards
a smoke-free,
happier world.
Thank you for your
company on our program
featuring this honored
recipient of
the Shining World
Leadership Award.
Now, please stay tuned
to Supreme Master
