Welcome, wonderful viewers, to this week’s edition of Planet Earth: Our Loving Home featuring a compassionate vegan environmentalist from Penang, Malaysia, Dr. Joean Oon. She is the principal of the Penang-based Naturopathic Family Care Centre, a lecturer for the International Chinese Cancer Prevention Society, a public speaker on the topics of health and inner peace and a passionate wife and mother of three adorable girls.

In 2006, Dr. Oon traveled to Thailand to learn alternative medicine from Dr. Rosukon Poompanvong, a naturopath and organic farmer. She was recognized in 2003 for her outstanding achievements in organic farming by the Bangkok, Thailand Regional Office for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Dr. Rosukon has been actively involved in enzyme research for more than 30 years. Most notably she is the creator of the garbage enzyme. The garbage enzyme is an organic solution produced by the simple fermentation of fresh vegetable and/or fruit skin waste, brown sugar and water.

Dr. Rosukon says the fermentation creates natural chains of proteins, mineral salts and enzymes. Based upon her research, Dr. Rosukon says the catalytic process during the production of the garbage enzyme generates ozone gas, O3, that reduces carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and heavy metals in clouds that trap heat, thereby mitigating global warming.

Because in the city you cannot grow many trees, we can use this organic matter, put it in an air-tight container and put in the sugar and water. Then you put it into bottles, air-tight, and let it ferment for a while, and then it releases oxygen all the time, and it’s the same as if you grew 10 trees.

Dr. Oon learned the technique of making the garbage enzyme from Dr. Rosukon and began advocating its use when she returned to Penang. Dr. Oon believes it is important every household make the enzyme and pour it into drainage and sewage systems to help cleanse the oceans and rivers of toxins. Dr. Oon says that one liter of garbage enzyme solution can purify up to 1,000 liters of contaminated river water.

Ordinary detergent simply wraps around the grease. When the wrapped grease particles are washed down the drain, they come together again and form a greasy layer called grease cake, which is full of grease and needs to be removed by shovels. If it’s not removed, it will clog up drains and cause flooding. The drainage and sewage systems will overflow.

If we add some enzyme to the cleaning detergent, it will disintegrate the grease into smaller particles, and micro-organisms in the air will further oxidize and decompose it. So, as long as we use the garbage enzyme, the grease cakes won’t form in drains, then there will be no blockages in our drainage systems, and clear water will flow unimpeded in drains.

Dr. Oon now gives us a short demonstration on the preparation of the garbage enzyme.

During the process of making the enzyme, very strong gases will be released, so we advise people to use plastic containers. We also need to use clean water. It’s quite easy to make the enzyme: what we need are one portion of brown sugar, three portions of kitchen waste and 10 portions of water.

Dr. Rosukon emphasizes that instead of white sugar, it’s best to use brown sugar, as it contains very high amounts of minerals. If you use more veggies than fruit, it will smell like pickled vegetables, but if you use more fruit peels, it will smell very fragrant. Note down the production date here. After three months, this bottle of enzyme will be ready to use.

For the first 30 days, the container’s cover will need to be opened daily to allow trapped gas to be released. When making the enzyme, we need to pay attention to one important thing. If you use this kind of bottle, you need to unscrew the cap from time to time, as it is very tight. You need to loosen the cap to release the gas. Loosen it slowly like this, then you will hear a fizzy sound, just like the sound of the bottle of carbonated drink being opened. Then, screw back the cap.

For safety’s sake, Dr. Rosukon always emphasizes the use of plastic containers. During the first month of the fermentation, alcohol will be released, so you will smell alcohol when you open the container. In the second month, you will smell an acidic smell, which is the smell of acetic acid. With many compounds such as minerals and vitamins, it will continue breaking down and naturally form the enzyme.

That’s why Dr. Rosukon said that it takes three months to make the enzyme for you to use. When you are done making the enzyme, you don’t need to use it right away. You can keep it for years - one year, two years, three years, even 10 or 20 years. The longer the period is, the smaller the molecules become, as the mixture continues to ferment and decompose. When the molecules get smaller, it will have a better penetration.

We promote the garbage enzyme, because we hope that people can reduce their kitchen waste by turning it into something useful which can be used in our daily lives. It’s so simple. If you make the enzyme at home, cockroaches, flies and mosquitoes will all move away from your house.

What are the remedies available when the enzyme solution is not fermented properly?

The enzyme should never turn bad, no matter how long it is kept. It turns bad only when there is something wrong with the production environment or the process of making. Then how can you remedy it? If your enzyme becomes very smelly like the smell of rotten eggs or feces, how can you remedy it? It’s very easy; just add one portion of brown sugar.

For instance, this bottle contains one liter of water. Then you need to quickly add 100 grams of brown sugar to it. Stir it thoroughly and then cover the cap tightly. After you seal it, do not open it again. One month later, you will find that it’s good again when you open it.

Sometimes, we may find worms in the enzyme. How did this happen? The main reason is that the cap is not tightly closed. As long as you seal the cap tightly, worms won’t grow. What if there is mold? Dr. Rosukon said that it is just the residue of dead bacteria.

Before using the fermented enzyme liquid, the residue should be filtered away leaving just the enzyme solution. The leftover residue can be flushed away to purify the drainage system or dried to be used as fertilizer. Dr. Oon promotes the garbage enzyme solution as a wonderful cleaning aid as well. She recommends diluting the enzyme and mixing it with household cleaning products to enhance their effectiveness.

She recommends using the solution as a vegetable, kitchen and toilet cleaner as she says it has anti-bacterial properties and also removes odor, grime and dirt. Besides helping our environment, the enzyme is also effective in cleaning greasy kitchen floors and laundry as it gets rid of grease and grime and makes them clean.

Moreover, you can use it to clean vegetables and fruit. Add two tablespoons of enzyme to a basin of water, soak the vegetables for at least 30 minutes. It will remove all the pesticides and chemical substances.

Garbage enzyme solution can also be used as an organic fertilizer to enrich the soil in farms and gardens. If you wish to use the enzyme in your gardens to water your plants, just add one tablespoonful of enzyme to one liter of water, then spray it on your plants and the soil. This will naturally fertilize the soil.

The rich soil will attract earthworms. With earthworms, your plants will naturally grow well. It’s very simple. You don’t need to spend extra money to purchase chemical fertilizers.

With the support of her staff, friends and family members, Dr. Oon is now an active speaker and regularly presents her lecture “Saving the Earth through the Garbage Enzyme” to the public. Her family generates one hundred 200-liter buckets of garbage enzyme on a regular basis. The enzyme is bottled and given away free to friends and to the public through seminars and workshops.

With the support of her country’s education department, other governmental bodies, and various non-profits, Dr. Oon makes regular visits to local schools, conducts workshops for young children, and organizes an activity called “Clean the Rivers and Drainage Systems with the Garbage Enzyme.” For example, the Perlis state government intends to promote the garbage enzyme and teach all the elementary students how to make it.

As a result of Dr. Oon’s hard work, Radio-Television Malaysia (RTM TV2) aired a series of special programs introducing the garbage enzyme to the public. Many vegetable and fruit farmers in Malaysia’s Cameron Highlands region use the enzyme as an alternative to chemical fertilizers on their farms, and they have all experienced increased yields and tastier produce, along with much fewer instances of bacterial diseases affecting crops.

Plant diseases have decreased. but The soil has improved, and the heavy metals and toxins such as chemical fertilizers in the soil have been decomposed. The produce tastes very sweet, because we now use less pesticides. The vegetables grow very well and the air quality has also improved.

After having watched Supreme Master Television programs regarding global warming, Dr. Oon is convinced that the quickest way to halt climate change is to stop consuming animal products. In addition to promoting the making of the garbage enzyme, Dr. Oon has been putting much emphasis in her public lectures about the need to abstain from meat, eggs and dairy products.

So the main objective in promoting vegetarianism is to address the issue of global warming, and inform the public that meat is the main culprit of global warming. We need to pay attention to this. Many people are very surprised when they learn about the scientific data, most of whom are unaware of the truth. It’s not that they don’t want to take action but they are just unaware.

I am very grateful to the team of Supreme Master Ching Hai; your programs and DVDs are of great help to me. Through your CDs, many people get an in-depth understanding about the reason behind vegetarianism. When we sit down to discuss it, they are very clear about the direction to take.

I only need to add some explanations on the medical aspect for their further understanding so that they are more willing to make a change. They are then clear about what they want to do, and how they can help others. Only through serving others will our lives be more fulfilled!

Dr. Rosukon Poompanvong, we salute you for creating the garbage enzyme which is benefitting so many people. Our sincere thanks Dr. Joean Oon and all volunteers for spreading the word about this enzyme and the vegan diet, as your endeavors are helping make our world a cleaner and greener place. Let your praiseworthy efforts continue to inspire and awaken more people to join hands to preserve this beautiful home for future generations.
