In good governance news, Peru prohibits smoking in public places. President of Peru His Excellency Alan García signed an executive order which also increases penalties for those not following the guidelines. In addition, smoking is banned in work vehicles, such as public transportation. Posters that say, “Environment 100 percent free of tobacco smoke” and “Smoking in public places is forbidden” are required to be displayed in community facilities.

Our gratitude, Your Excellency Alan García and Peru, for your commitment to protecting the health of the country’s citizens. May all governments adopt legislation promoting positive habits for long and vibrant lives.

For this wise and life-saving policy, Supreme Master Ching Hai is honoring Peru with the Shining World Leadership Award.
