축산업의 진실

리포터: ２００６년 세계연합 식량농업기구 (ＦＡＯ)는 육류와 유제품을 위한 가축 사육이 지구 온난화 원인의 １８％를 차지한다고 밝혔다. 이는 모든 교통수단을 합친 것보다 크다. 그 후, 과학자들은 축산업의 영향이 그 보다 더 더욱 크다는 사실을 점차 명확히 밝혀내었다. 

라젠트라 파차우리 박사 - 유엔 기후변화에 관한 정부간 패널 의장, 채식인 : 많은 사람들이 １８％라는 추산은 과소평가된 것이며 실제로 훨씬 더 높다는 이메일을 보내오고 있습니다.  

T. 콜린 캠벨 박사 – 저명한 영양학 연구자, 미국 코넬 대학교, 비건채식인: 최근 얻은 정보에 의하면 현재 새로운 추산결과에 의하면 １５~２０％가 아니라 최소한 온실가스의 절반 또는 그 이상이 축산업에 의한 것이라 합니다. 

리포터: 온실가스는 실상 모든 육류 생산 단계 마다 배출되고 있습니다. 여기는 ３대 온실 가스가 포함됩니다. 이산화탄소, 아산화질소, 메탄입니다. 그런데 유엔 보고서를 포함한 대부분의 연구서들에는 메탄의 영향력이 이산화탄소의２３배로 계산되어있습니다.  하지만 실제로 배출 후 ２０년간의 위력은 ７２에서 백배에 이릅니다. 

베리 부룩 교수 - 호주 아델라이드 대학, 기후변화와 지속가능성에 대한 연구소장 : 이 보고서를 보시면 메탄이 이산화탄소보다 ２３배 강하다고 말하고 있습니다. 하지만 메탄의 온난화 효과는 ７２배 입니다.  이는 큰 차이를 만들죠. 

노암 모 - 미국 뉴욕 공과 대학, 물리학자, 채식인 : 메탄은 １２년간 잔류하며 １세기간 이산화탄소의 ２５배 영향을 줍니다. 하지만 짧은 주기로 보면  “앞으로 ２０년간 같은 양의 이산화탄소에 비해 메탄은 얼마나 온실 효과를 줄까요？” 정답은 ２０년간 메탄은 이산화탄소보다 ７２배 많은 영향을 준다는 것입니다. 

리포터: 축산업은 세계 메탄 방출량의 ３７％를 차지하는 인류가 초래한 가장 큰 메탄 방출원입니다. 

키르크 스미스 박사, 미국 버클리 캘리포니아 대학,  유엔 기후변화에 관한 정부간 패널 회원 : 장기적으로 우리는 이산화탄소를 처리해야 합니다. 하지만 ２０년 안에 온난화를 감소하기 위해 잔류 시간이 짧은 온실 가스인 메탄을 줄여야 합니다. 메탄을 줄여야 합니다 향후 ２０년 간 방출 온실 가스가 미치는 전체 지구 온난화 중 이산화탄소의 영향은 단 ４０％입니다. ６０％ 이상은 잔류기간이 짧은 가스에서 기인할 것이며 메탄의 영향이 가장 큽니다. 

리포터: 축산업은 계산되지 않은 부분도 있어 배출이 더욱 많습니다.  화석연료 연소로 이산화탄소와 함께 배출되는 분진은 건강을 해치지만 냉각효과가 있습니다. 

노암 모 - 미국 뉴욕 공과 대학, 물리학자, 채식인 : 화석연료를 태우면 이산화탄소가 지구를 가열하고 분진은 냉각효과를 줍니다. 최종결과를 추산해 보면 거의 제로에 가까운데 서로 상쇄되기 때문입니다. 그러니 지금까지 그래왔고 앞으로 계속될 온난화는 다른 원천에 의한 것입니다. 가장 주원인은 바로 메탄입니다. 

노암 모 - 미국 뉴욕 공과 대학, 물리학자, 채식인 : 우리는 심각한 환경 위기에 처해있음을 세계 도처에서 목격하고 있습니다. 직면하고 있는 경고는 우리의 노력으로 최선의 효과를 거두기 위해 다른 가스 배출에 주력할 것이 아니라 메탄에 주목해야 한다는 것입니다. 메탄은 가축에서 가장 많이 배출됩니다.

칭하이 무상사 : 육류 생산은 ８０％의 지구 온난화를 초래합니다. 다방면의 오염으로 이어지기 때문이죠:  운송, 물, 산림벌목, 냉동보관, 가축에게 투여되는 약품들, 인간의 의료…… 등 온갖 오염이 축산업에서 기인합니다. 사용하는 토양만 오염되는게 아닙니다. 단지 메탄가스와 아산화질소 배출만이 아닙니다. 모두 이것 때문이죠. 열거하면 끝이 없어요. 
지구를 구하는데 친환경 기술에만 의존 할 수 없습니다. 온난화의 가장 중대한 원인은 축산업이기 때문이죠. 모두들 알고 있습니다. 모든 과학자들이 보고하고 있습니다.

ANIMAL AGRICULTURE: THE FACTS

VOICE: In 2006, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) had estimated that raising animals for meat and dairy was responsible for 18% of global warming; more than all the world’s transportation put together. However, it is becoming increasingly clear to scientists that the livestock industry is playing a more significant role.

Dr. Rajendra Pachauri – Chair of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, VEGETARIAN (M): I’ve received a number of emails from people that I respect saying that the 18% figure is an underestimate; it’s a low estimate and in actual fact it’s much higher.

Dr. T. Colin Campbell – Renowned nutrition researcher, Cornell University, USA, VEGAN (M): I just had some information just recently, that the new figures now indicate that at least half of the greenhouse gases that are up there now, not that 15 or 20%, at least half – and maybe considerably more – are due to livestock production.

VOICE: Greenhouse gasses are emitted during virtually every step of the meat producing process, including the three major greenhouse gasses: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, & methane. However, what is unaccounted for is the fact that instead of the 23 times figure used in most reports, including that of the United Nations, methane is actually 72-100 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period.

Professor Barry Brook University of Adelaide, Australia Director of the Research Institute for Climate Change and Sustainability: (M): If you look at these reports they will suggest it (methane) has about 25 times the impact of CO2. But really when it’s up there in the atmosphere doing its work, it’s 72 times the impact and that makes a big difference.

Noam Mohr – Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): Methane is trapping in just 12 years, 25 times as much heat as carbon dioxide does in a century. If you look in a shorter time scale, and say “how much warming over the next 20 years is this quantity of carbon dioxide going to cause versus this quantity of methane?” Then the methane causes 72 times as much warming as the carbon dioxide over 20 years.

VOICE: At 37% of global methane emissions, livestock is the single largest source of human-caused methane.

Dr. Kirk Smith Professor, University of California, Berkeley, USA,  United Nations IPCC member (M): Sure we have to deal with CO2 in the long run, but if you want to make an impact on climate in the next 20 years, the place to do it is with the shorter-lived greenhouse gases, most important of which is methane. So, of the emissions in the next 20 years, the CO2 in this year’s emissions will only be about 40% of the total warming. The other 60% or more will be from the shorter-lived gases, most important of which is methane.

VOICE: Livestock has an even larger share of emissions when yet another unaccounted factor is acknowledged: aerosols, or particles released along with CO2 from burning fossil fuels that, despite their detrimental health aspects, actually have a cooling effect.

Noam Mohr – Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): So when you burn these fossil fuels, you get carbon dioxide which heats the planet, and aerosols which cool the planet. And the net effect, if you calculate them out, comes out to about zero, they roughly cancel each other out. So the warming we’ve been seeing and are likely to see in the near future is dominated by other sources, the main one of which is methane.

Noam Mohr – Physicist, New York University Polytechnic Institute, USA, VEGETARIAN (M): We have a critical environmental crisis now happening with effects that we’re seeing around the world, and if we want to address the warming we’re seeing now, the best “bang for our buck” comes in addressing the other gases; mostly methane...and its number 1 source, animal agriculture.
