사막화
사막화는 과도한 방목과 가축사료 재배지역 확장이 원인이다. (모래언덕 고정을 포함한 건조지역 TPN3방목장 관리, UNCCD,
2003) 사막화로 이어지는 전세계 토양 침식의 50% 이상이 가축 때문이다.
매년 750억 톤의 표토가 농경 관리 부실, 기후 변화, 가축 방목으로
인해 침식되고 있다. 미국에서만54%의 초지에서 과도 방목이 이루어지고 있으며 매년 1헥타르(1만 평방미터)마다 100톤 이상의 표토가 손실되고

발표한 연구)
2010년에 이라크, 중국, 차드, 호주, 몽골과 그 외 나라들이 심각한 가뭄을 보고했으며 가축 방목이 현상을 더 악화시키고 있다.
