Higher liquor taxes in Sri Lanka instituted for public safety.
According to Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, the Sri Lankan government has steadily increased alcohol taxes over the past three years in efforts to discourage drinking in society. The deputy finance minister noted that the government is also issuing fewer liquor licenses than the past and has stepped up initiatives to halt illicit liquor and drugs.
