Officials have reported four fatalities thus far, with at least 20 others ill, some critically, after the persons consumed raw beef at several locations of a restaurant chain in Japan.
Two of those who perished were children, both just six years old, after being infected with the deadly O-111 strain of E. coli bacteria from the contaminated meat.
The similarly fatal O-157 strain has also been detected in meat that was consumed in several of the other cases.
