A new study conducted by Professors Sarah Davies and Gail Kinman at the University of Bedfordshire in the United Kingdom highlighted helpful traits for those who have successfully regained sobriety.

In evaluating more than 100 individuals who had overcome alcohol addiction, the study found that those who had a positive view of their previous life experiences were more likely to be successful.

In addition, those with high levels of spirituality were better able to transcend the feelings of anxiety that are often associated with addiction and withdrawal.

Professor Davies stated that this study thus suggests therapeutic interventions that help problem drinkers view their past experiences more positively as well as those that emphasize a higher purpose and meaning in life could be highly effective in aiding recovery.
