A study of salmon fish farms in Norway and the UK has found that disease is reaching near epidemic proportions, with 417 farms reporting a disorder causing the destruction of heart and skeletal muscle tissue, which causes death in 20% of the fish.
Furthermore, this infection can spread to wild fish. The team of US and Norwegian researchers, led by W. Ian Lipkin, MD, Professor of Epidemiology at Columbia University in New York, USA further discovered that the cause of the affliction is likely a previously unknown virus.
In the fish farms tested, 28 out of 29 samples were found to contain the newly identified virus, with some 25% of wild salmon tested that were also infected.
Dr. Lipkin and colleagues, we appreciate your research highlighting these perils of farmed fish practices.
Let us avoid such health and environmental hazards altogether by making food choices that are animal-free, for the greatest vitality and peace of mind.
