Effective September 1, 2010, legislation passed in July 2009 now prohibits smoking in nearly all public spaces in Greece, with individual violators facing fines and businesses the possibility of losing their license.
With the ban and its slogan “Stub out your cigarettes, add to your life,” the government is renewing its commitment to a smoke-free society.
As stated by Prime Minister Georges Papandreou, “(This measure) contributes to our goals ... of making the country more viable, not only economically but in daily life.”
Our heartfelt congratulations, Your Excellency and Greece for this decision to safeguard public health. May your noble initiative motivate similar measures that offer the vibrant well-being of tobacco-free lifestyles to fellow citizens across the globe.
