In good governance news, Australia’s largest state enacts the most stringent anti-smoking laws in the country. Western Australia has banned smoking in a car with children and within 10 meters of a playground. In addition, retailers are prohibited from displaying any products made from tobacco. Restrictions have also been placed on smoking in outdoor cafes. Professor Mike Daube, president of the Australian Council on Smoking and Health, praised the new laws. He stated, “It means quite simply that we’re going to be saving more lives and preventing more disease.”
Bravo, Western Australia, for taking this important step to protect the lives and well-being of millions of people. May you soon see the results in vibrantly healthy citizens and pristinely clean air.
