During a 3-month National Firearm Amnesty period ending Sunday, April 11, over 30,000 guns were surrendered. The amnesty was initiated as part of a national call to further peace through the removal of dangerous weaponry.
In a statement to the press, Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele thanked all parties such as regional governments as well as groups such as Gun Free South Africa and Business Against Crime South Africa for their support, as he urged for further action, saying, 『Today does not mark a final wrap … but a reflection of what we have achieved and a revitalization of our energies going forward.』
Bravo Commissioner Cele and South Africa for your efforts to bring safety and a more tranquil society to the nation’s people.
May your noble example motivate many more toward similar endeavors so that we may soon see peace prevail throughout our global community.
