Uruguay declares drought-induced state of emergency. With rainfall at the lowest level in three decades and farmers still unable to plant seasonal crops due to the prolonged drought, Uruguayan Minister of Agriculture, Ernesto Agazzi, has declared more than 2.5 million hectares as emergency zones. In an effort to conserve water, the government has banned activities such as watering gardens, washing cars and filling swimming pools, while also promising assistance to the some 32,000 affected families on small farms. We pray for the Divine grace of rain to alleviate these extremely dry conditions in Uruguay. May humans everywhere help diminish conditions like these by responding with love and kindness toward our planet and all her inhabitants.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Of course, the changing pattern of weather affecting everything else as well. But I think it affects more of the husbandry, the animal raising way of life. Now, because animal raising takes a lot of water, more than even growing vegetables, so if we are short of water, then, of course, the livestock industry will become automatically minimized. And I hope it will be zero soon. Because the more they raise animals, the more water they need. And the more water they need, the less water we even have for vegetarian food production, like growing crops and all that. So I hope everyone realizes it.
Japan taps into power of volcanoes with geothermal energy plantsJapan plugs into more geothermal energy. With 18 plants already in operation, Japan is seeking to make further use of this sustainable energy source. One of the newest geothermal projects is a US$430 million plant being built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Materials and US-based J-Power. With this project’s goal of generating 60,000 kilowatts of power, Japan’s government is now creating guidelines for further development of geothermal energy. Law Center Names 10 Most Endangered Places in southeastern USEndangered areas identified in southeastern US. Leading ecological organization, the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC), has evaluated a 6-state region which includes Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama and listed the top 10 sites of natural beauty and diversity facing immediate threats from global warming and human development. SELC's Deputy Director Jeff Gleason stated, “If our six-state region were viewed as a country, we would rank seventh in the world for output of carbon dioxide.” The deputy director thus recommended carbon emission reduction goals as an essential part of the region’s global warming solution.
