Swine flu raises alarm in various regions - 6 Nov 2009

Health officials in the Ukraine have announced a rise in fatalities to more than 90 over recent weeks in what some are saying may be the result of a mutation of the swine flu. The government is requesting help from the international community amidst a severe lack of basic supplies and medical equipment. Azerbaijan is sending 20 tons of humanitarian aid, while neighboring countries of Poland, Hungary and Romania prepare for the virus’ potential spread to their countries.

Meanwhile, with swine flu cases spreading rapidly in South Korea and 45 lives lost, officials have declared the highest level of red alert, thus allowing officials to restrict travel and cancel public events more swiftly while mobilizing to fight the flu.

In Scotland, UK, the number of children under five years of age being admitted to hospitals has been increasing steeply, with 49 children under age five who have been hospitalized. In the US, the state of California reports that a third of the officially diagnosed patients are requiring intensive care treatment and that the swine flu is taking the lives of 11 percent of patients overall and 20 percent of older persons.

Some of the countries with newly increased fatalities include Iraq, Turkey, Belarus, Iran, Colombia and the United Kingdom. Slovenia and Belarus have each reported their first swine flu death. Total global fatalities due to swine flu have reached 6,304 in official cases worldwide, with tallies of total infections being far too many to even count.

Resistance to the standard Tamiflu antiviral medication is also on the rise, as the Netherlands reported her first case of Tamiflu-resistant swine flu in a very sick patient. Meanwhile, China has noted success in treating the illness with a new traditional herbal medicine that is also said to have no side effects.

Our prayers go to all those suffering from these worrying conditions and to families mourning the loss of loved ones. May we all adopt the vital and hygienic plant-based diet to halt the tragedy of zoonotic, animal-transmitted pandemics as these.
