On the occasion of her venerated 75th birthday, Her Imperial Majesty Michiko, Empress of Japan appealed for the international abolition of atomic weapons, suggesting also that her country seek to bring more understanding to the international community.

An issued statement said, “The horrors of nuclear weapons are not only the magnitude of their destruction but also the serious and tragic effects of radiation that leaves victims suffering long after their exposure.” At the same time, the Empress lauded world leaders such as US President Barack Obama for their determination to achieve an atomic weapon-free globe.
