North Korea agrees to emergency six-party talks to ease tensions. Following meetings last week, Chinese officials have now confirmed North Korea’s willingness to join talks with China, South Korea, Japan, Russia and the US.

Stephen Bosworth, US special envoy to North Korea (speaking English): My country, like the other five countries participating in the six-party talks, are already committed to negotiate toward the establishment of a peace treaty on the Korean peninsula.

Aleksey Borodavkin, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister (speaking Russian): I must express satisfaction that the September 17, 2005 statement on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula found adherence in Pyongyang. It’s a basic document which lay in the basis of the six-party talks, which should form the basis for its continuation.

Stephen Bosworth, US special envoy to North Korea (speaking English): As I pointed out in Pyongyang, one of the fundamental requirements of permanent peace on the Korean peninsula, will be the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Jiang Yu, a spokeswoman in China’s foreign ministry stated, “China and North Korea have … put constructive effort into building peace on the Korean Peninsula, while maintaining calmness and restraint.” As a known advocate for a peaceful solution between North and South Korea, Russia has also been holding consultations with partners in the six-party talks. A meeting on Tuesday, December 14 between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his North Korean counterpart Pak Ui Chun culminated in an agreement to engage in joint efforts toward harmony and stability between the two Koreas. They also signed an accord to continue developing bilateral ties.

We applaud your efforts, Your Excellencies of China, Russia, North Korea and all others working to further diplomatic resolution. Our prayers for continued efforts of goodwill to restore lasting harmonious relations across the entire Korean Peninsula.
