Following the inaugural address of Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos on Saturday, August 7, in which he expressed a goal of rebuilding diplomatic relations with Venezuela, President Hugo Chavez announced his similar wish along with plans to request a direct meeting with the Colombian leader.

A subsequent discussion between the countries’ foreign ministers resulted in a meeting being scheduled between the two heads of state. The Venezuelan president, who has previously negotiated with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in support of peace with the Colombian government, also affirmed once more his wish for the group’s total disarmament.

Our sincere accolades, Your Excellencies, for your mutually conciliatory actions to restore harmonious relations. Wishing for peace between the gentle-hearted people of your countries and with all neighbors of the world.
