On Wednesday, May 11 a report stated that pigs in the Burmese Bago region have been infected with the deadly Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS), or blue ear disease.

This area is the most recent amongst many that have been affected by a pandemic that began in February this year, with more than 1,000 pigs who have succumbed thus far to the untreatable disease.

In an effort to contain the outbreak, officials banned the transport of all pigs from Bago. Although officials state that the disease has not yet spread to other animals or humans, the World Health Organization for Animal Health already issued an emergency warning for the 9.3 million pigs in the country.

We appreciate the concern of the World Health Organization and Burmese officials wishing to safeguard public health.

Our prayers that humanity soon turns away from consuming animals, choosing instead to regard the sensitive pig and all other co-inhabitants with only respect and love.
