Dr. Josefin Starkhammar,of Lund University, Sweden collaborated with researchers from San Diego, USA to observe that dolphins and porpoises are capable of simultaneously generating two sound beams.

These transmissions can be sent to different directions at varying frequencies, and are thought to help the mammals locate objects more precisely. Previously, it was thought that only one of the sound-producing organs was active during echolocation.

Dr. Starkhammar stated, “We humans have a lot to learn from dolphins. What is more, the knowledge could be important in finding ways to protect dolphins, for example from noise disturbance.”

Our thankfulness, Dr. Starkhammar and colleagues, for your remarkable findings. May our amazing and loving marine friends always thrive in safety and happiness on our shared ecosphere.
