A team from Queens University in Canada who examined the histories of 425 people treated for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), a condition caused by maternal drinking during pregnancy, found that FASD sufferers had six times the incidence of epilepsy and were also more likely to endure at least one seizure at some point in their lives.

With nearly half a million people in countries like the United Kingdom who suffer from epilepsy, with seizures that can occur from a sudden burst of excess electrical activity in the brain, neuroscience experts in both the US and Canada are advising expectant mothers not to drink alcohol at all during pregnancy as part of an overall program of good prenatal care.

Our thanks, Queens University and US neuroscientists for your careful and revealing observations. May women everywhere be encouraged toward complete abstinence from such a harmful substance for their own well-being and that of the cherished unborn.
