Recalled meat still sold for human consumption.

A recent investigative report by the international newspaper USA TODAY found that at the same time over 825,000 pounds of meat was being recalled because of contamination with the bacteria Salmonella, meat from the same processing plant was still being purchased by the US government for use in schools throughout the nation.

In fact, food-borne illness outbreaks from 1998 to 2007 have sickened at least 23,000 S students.

Meanwhile, a November 30 article in the US-based Food Safety News pointed out that meat recalled for bacterial contamination even with the potentially fatal E. coli still finds its way back to grocery stores in cooked form. Moreover, companies are not required to report whether products contain this recalled, infected meat, thus hindering the ability of food safety inspectors to confirm that the products are indeed safe.

Journalists for USA TODAY and Food Safety News, we thank you and all others working to uncover the true risks of meat consumption. Let us step swiftly toward a life free of animal products to ensure the health of our precious young as well as ourselves.
