Since Europe’s only completely smoke-free facility opened in August 2008, the UK’s Isle of Man has seen burglaries drop by more than 35%, along with a 25% decrease
in the number of assaults as well as a drop in domestic incidents and car thefts.
Police say that potential wrongdoers are strongly deterred by the smoking ban, which extends also to prison employees who are not allowed to smoke anywhere on the premises.
Inmates are provided with free nicotine patches and counseling sessions to help them overcome the habit.
Isle of Man officials, we laud your wise decision on this effective way to create a safer community.
May leaders everywhere be motivated toward similar smoke-free measures for the manifold benefits to citizens, one and all.
