Everywhere in the world, we can observe and be touched by acts of kindness. People from all walks of life, faiths, and cultures extend themselves beyond the call of duty to help others unconditionally. Through their noble deeds, humanity as a whole is elevated.

To commend virtuous actions and encourage more people to be inspired by their examples, Supreme Master Ching Hai has lovingly created a series of awards, including the Shining World Leadership Award, Shining World Compassion Award, Shining World Hero and Heroine Awards, Shining World Honesty Award, Shining World Protection Award, Shining World Intelligence Award, and Shining World Inventor Award, to recognize some of the most exemplary, generous, caring, and courageous people who walk amongst us.

Halo, caring viewers! Today’s program features a Shining World Compassion Award recipient, Auntie Jia-Jia, the founder of the non-profit organization Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist (HOPE). HOPE provides a haven for stray and abandoned dogs in the small town of Lima Kedai in Johor state, Malaysia. Auntie tries her best to re-home the canines she takes in and also promotes the spaying and neutering of dogs in her community. How did Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist begin?

It was on an evening two years ago. It was raining very hard with gusty wind. I came home and saw a small female dog running to my door and barking at me nonstop.

Aunty Jia-Jia continued to closely watch the dog who was acting strangely.

After barking for some time, she ran over to a ditch. Then she came back, barked at me again, and then ran over and looked at the ditch again. When she saw that I did not respond, she came back to bark at me again, and then ran over to the ditch again.

What could running back and forth from Aunty Jia-Jia’s house to the ditch possibly mean?

She kept staring at the ditch. Later I felt that something must be wrong. Otherwise she wouldn’t bark at me like that. So I went to the ditch to have a look. It turned out that her puppy fell into the ditch. So I helped pick up the little puppy. After I picked up the puppy, the mother dog was very thankful.

When a dog is grateful to you, they are grateful for life!

She kept coming back and wandering around at my door every day. Because she was not fixed, she gave birth twice a year. Shortly after that, I saw her pregnant again. Then I thought I needed to find a solution. So I took her to have her fixed.

As life on the streets is very rough for those canines without loving homes, Aunty Jia-Jia decided she must do something about the situation.

After that, I sent her to an animal shelter. Altogether I sent a few dogs there, but the condition of the shelter was not very good. So I thought that the animal shelters also had their difficulties. So it made me want to keep them. Then the more I kept, the more came, until I adopted twenty of them.

The more I looked, the more dogs I saw on the street. I could not bear to see so many poor stray dogs. They don’t have a place to stay, and they don’t have food to eat. Yet they are beaten and abused by people. So I started the Hope Animal Sanctuary and continued up to now.

Seeing the dogs living happily every day is my biggest motivation. Seeing them healthy, happy and running around freely is my biggest motivation. When they are sick, I nurture them to health. Seeing them healthy again is my biggest encouragement to continue looking after them.

Let’s also hear from Mohan, a volunteer who has helped Aunty Jia-Jia since Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist began operating about why he works with the canines.

It brings me a lot of joy. The most important is to be able to do something for these pitiful stray dogs. Seeing them eating well and playing happily is my greatest joy!

I believe everyone has heard of the saying that “All beings have a soul.” So we really should treat our animal friends with kindness. As to stray dogs, no dog wants to wander in the streets. They also want to have their own home where they can eat well and sleep well. So I want to tell all friends who love animals, who love dogs, please save them! Please don’t turn away from them just because they are homeless, dirty or they smell. If we give stray dogs good medical treatment and care, we will be able to see their lovely nature.

And that is exactly what is being provided at the sanctuary – care from wonderful veterinarians.

Also, I would like to thank my vets, who have accompanied us all the way through. This is Dr. Lee Ee Liang. With his boundless love, he has also been assisting me all this time. Many dogs were sick. My doctors have always been helping me and giving me advice. So I am very thankful to them.

I just started to work here at Xin Shan, and met a loving person here - Auntie Jia-Jia. I see her adopting dogs all the time, the sick ones. And some of them are really sick, or seriously injured from car accidents. As veterinarians, it’s our job to help the dogs. So we help all the dogs adopted by Auntie Jia-Jia and cure them. Seeing them suffer, we feel bad as well. It’s because when they suffer like this, it’s our responsibility to relieve them from the pain. Then naturally they will become nicer and healthier.

Please stay tuned to Supreme Master Television. We’ll be right back with more about the wonderful Malaysian canine sanctuary, Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist.

A dog can live up to 10 to 15 years. So when we adopt one, we must consider it very carefully. If we want to have this dog, we must promise to treat him well, and keep him until he passes on of old age. That’s the way it should be.

We should treat them with boundless love and patience. If we treat animals with boundless love and patience, animals will repay us and thank us in return.

Welcome back to the Shining World Compassion Award series featuring Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist (HOPE), in Malaysia, an organization which rescues unwanted and abandoned dogs and provides them with a safe haven. HOPE then tries its best to find families that can offer permanent, caring homes to the canines.

The Hope Animal Sanctuary was established one and half years ago. It’s almost two years.

Our sanctuary was built on an abandoned pig farm which is located in a small town called Lima Kedai, in Johor State, Malaysia. It’s about an hour drive from Johor Bahru. All stray dogs have been neutered and vaccinated, and provided with basic necessities.

I had all 200 some dogs neutered and vaccinated, and spent a lot of effort to take care of them. Some of them were about to die when I adopted them. I asked veterinaries to help treat them.

How many people are helping you manage the Hope Animal Sanctuary right now?

A volunteer, Mohan, my daughter Siew Kuan, and a group of online friends.

Online friends?

The friends I met on the Internet, it’s them!

Auntie Jia-Jia, do you have any message to dog caregivers?

My recommendation is to vaccinate and neuter your dog.

We should regard him as a family member.

For Aunty Jia-Jia’s loving efforts and care of the animals, Supreme Master Ching Hai recently honored her with the prestigious Shining World Compassion Award. The following is an excerpt from a kind letter Supreme Master Ching Hai sent her:

Dear Auntie, It is with the greatest pleasure and gratitude that we present to you the “Shining World Compassion Award.” This Award is presented in recognition of your motherly care in providing a home for strays, for sacrificing your own life and comfort to serve them and for your wonderful example of love in action touching hearts and inspiring a humane world.

Much appreciated Auntie Jia-Jia, your endearing story of the life-saving work you are doing in Johor has given us a shining example of compassion, mercy and love. Originally, you only occasionally fed stray dogs. When a mama-dog came to you for help after her baby fell down a drain, your life changed to one where you could no longer tolerate the pain and injustice faced by animals. Being dissatisfied with the standard of care of other homes, you started a small dog sanctuary last year beginning with 20 loved ones.

Now it has grown to 200 grateful companions causing you to sell your home and deplete your savings just to cover costs. Yet you continue, undeterred by obstacles and blessed by Heaven due to your unconditional love. You and the dogs have brought out the best in others, whom benefit by providing funds for these precious animals.

Auntie, it is people like you, human angels who have come to Earth to not only help canines, but to teach people how to love and cherish all animals as they would their own child, and as part of God. You have witnessed that animals have a divine intelligence no different to ours, which is why we must care for them and why your example is so special. You touched us to tears!

For selflessly providing a loving sanctuary for dogs in need, for your passionate and kind-hearted benevolent generosity, and for being a dedicated and noble role model, we hereby applaud and celebrate the compassionate deeds of Auntie Jia-Jia. With Great Honour, Love and Blessings, The Supreme Master Ching Hai

Aunty Jia-Jia was presented with a beautiful crystal Award plaque, which reads as follows: In Recognition Of Warm-hearted Service and Nurturing Support Creating A Haven Of Heavenly Care And Protection For our Canine Friends in Need With Compliments and Gratitude For Your Courageous Dedication And Loving Kindness In addition, Aunty Jia-Jia received DVDs, CDs, and books by Supreme Master Ching Hai, along with her loving gift of US$10,000 to support the continued operation of HOPE Animal Sanctuary.

In the beginning, I had some savings. After it was used up, I sold a house. I used the money from the house to adopt stray dogs.

I thank Supreme Master Ching Hai very much for her selfless donation, which is urgent and timely help to the homeless animals. On behalf of all the animals, I thank Supreme Master Ching Hai from the bottom of my heart!

We applaud Aunty Jia-Jia for her compassionate and loving care of the neglected and homeless dogs in her community. May Heaven bless all the canines at the Homeless & Orphan Pets Exist sanctuary and the staff as well with much protection, love, and comfort.

People focus too much on what is wrong in their lives as opposed to what is working in their lives. They’re so busy complaining that they’re not going to manifest anything of value.

Reverend Will Bowen has conceived of the idea of using purple bracelets to help people overcome their habit of complaining.

Becoming complaint-free is not about shutting up and sucking up whatever the world sends you; it’s about healthy communication.

The main thing is space, for such a large species as Orca to be in such a small, confined space. Even the biggest tank isn’t that big to them. They can only go maybe five fluke strokes before they hit the wall, and have to turn. This is just nothing compared to the natural world.
