Animal companions honored in religious holiday. On Sunday, October 3, the Roman Catholic faithful brought animal friends of all descriptions, from dogs to cats to iguanas, as they attended church for the annual blessing of animals, held the day before World Animal Day and the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. This spiritual honoring of animals was first initiated in 1995 by the Philippines Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) as a way to further raise awareness of animal care and to show respect for all of God’s creations.
What a truly wonderful way to celebrate humans’ love and protection of animal co-inhabitants in remembrance of the Divine. Wishing the Philippines and countries worldwide ever more harmony with all animal friends as we cherish the gift of their presence on Earth.
