In animal news, gentle Humphrey the hippo proves to be a wonderful friend. Marius Els, 40, of Free State, South Africa adopted Humphrey when he was five months old. Now six years old, the herbivorous hippo freely wanders around Mr. Els’ 400-acre property. Mr. Els stated, “Humphrey’s like a son to me, he’s just like a human.” Humphrey, who weighs 1,200 kilograms, is a strong swimmer, and even gives Mr. Els a ride to the other side of the river after getting his favorite snack of apples.
