A meeting in Qatar, the Doha Conference in Support of Development and Investment in the Union of Comoros, receives international pledges totalling US$540 million for the nation.

The United States

The US pledges US$200 million to support the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in its 2010 worldwide aid efforts to care for the displaced; US$26 million in food assistance to Afghanistan, including high-protein soybeans and soya flour; and US$4.9 million to provide Yemeni citizens displaced by civil conflict with shelter and other emergency supplies. 

“American Idol” TV talent show

Organized by the reality TV talent show “American Idol,” the televised benefit “Idol Gives Back” raises US$45 million for charity.

Australia

Australia donates US$27 million to help Indonesia preserve her rainforests;

US$9.2 million to help clear landmines and provide awareness-raising support for communities in Laos, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon; US$2.8 million to provide education fees for 145,000 Solomon Islands’ students and US$300,000 to aid island residents affected by Cyclone Ului; and US$18.6 million to boost food supplies in eastern and southern Africa by helping farmers develop drought-resistant crops.

The United Kingdom and the United Nations

The UK and UN donate a combined total of US$19 million to launch a lifesaving health care program for expectant and breastfeeding mothers and their infants in Sierra Leone. 

Germany

Germany donates US$6 million to five UN Food and Agriculture Organization programs for sustenance and agricultural development in Africa and other parts of the world; and donates €1.6 million for emergency relief to aid persons displaced by civil conflict in the Republic of the Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Russia

Russia donates US$5.5 million to purchase 10,000 metric tons of flour as food staples for Tajikistan.

The World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency

The World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency jointly donate US$3.4 million to benefit students in Kosovo.

Japan

Japan donates US$2.56 million for a UN project in the Philippines that mitigates civil conflict through improved opportunities as well as protection of women and children; and donates US$235,000 to benefit Yemeni residents through the construction of a medical center, medical equipment purchase and school rehabilitation for disabled students.   

African Humanitarian Action

Ethiopia-based African Humanitarian Action donates US$2.3 million to construct a health center and provide staff with medicine and training in Kpayeh-Quollie, Liberia. 

Norway

Norway donates US$1.7 million to humanitarian organization CARE and the United Nations World Food Program for their work to prevent hunger in Niger; and donates €253,000 to the Chinese Red Cross to assist quake-stricken residents in Qinghai province, China.

The Goldman Environmental Foundation

The Goldman Environmental Foundation honors six recipients with distinctions that include cash awards of US$150,000 each for their dedicated efforts to protecting wildlife and the environment.

10,000 Swiss children

Ten thousand Swiss children raise nearly US$500,000 to buy school supplies for students in more than 150 Mauritanian schools.

France

France donates €400,000 to support Ethiopia’s partnership with the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Food Program in benefiting children’s health.

Canada

Canada donates US$250,000 in humanitarian aid especially for women and children affected by the earthquake in China’s Qinghai province.

The Emirates Foundation

The Emirates Foundation recognizes and awards cash grants of up to US$135,000 each to nine different organizations for their work in benefiting people with special needs.  

The US Agency for International Development

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) donates US$100,000 in medical supplies to assist 10 hospitals in Kyrgyzstan. 

Dwight Howard and Adonal Foyle

US National Basketball Association players Dwight Howard and Adonal Foyle of Florida’s Orlando Magic team launch the Dwight Howard Fund to assist at-risk children globally, with an initial US$100,000 for youths in Haiti. 

Thailand

The Thai government approves a US$100,000 donation to assist quake-affected residents in Qinghai province, China.

China Overseas Tibetans Association, USA

Members of the US-based China Overseas Tibetans Association raise US$73,000 for residents affected by the recent quake in the Tibetan area of China’s Qinghai province. 

South Korea

South Korea provides Fiji with US$50,000 in emergency aid following a recent cyclone.

China

China donates US$49,000 in medical equipment for use in Tanzania’s operating rooms and eye clinics. 

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI

His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI donates US$30,000 to assist Ugandans following recent floods and landslides.

Yao Jing, Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Pakistan

Chinese Deputy Ambassador to Pakistan, Yao Jing, donates US$30,000 to the Pakistan Red Crescent Society to assist Hunza landslide victims. 

The 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu

The 11th Panchen Lama Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu donates US$14,700 and sends words of encouragement to Tibetan quake victims in Yushu County, China, also requesting the prayers of monks at Lhasa’s Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery.

Colombia

Colombia sends a third shipment of humanitarian aid to Haiti containing 380 tons of food and construction materials to rebuild homes, schools and health centers.

The Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society

The Kuwaiti Red Crescent Society sends 140 tons of relief supplies as its fourth humanitarian aid shipment to assist some 350,000 people in Yemen. 

Ecuador

Ecuador sends eight tons of food and medicines in her third shipment of earthquake relief to Chile.

American singer and meat-free advocate Carrie Underwood donates US$10,000 to the Bidawee Manhattan Animal Shelter in New York, USA.

Founder Tom Henderson and Shelter Box provide disaster victims worldwide with 10-person tent relief kits containing blankets, cooking equipment, tools and other essential supplies. 

39 Cuban doctors

Thirty-nine Cuban doctors return home after two years of providing medical assistance in remote areas of Timor Leste.

The Spanish patrol ship Navarra rescues an Iranian sailing vessel and her 13-member crew after they were stranded with no food or water for several days off the coast of Somalia.
