A
 new report by the European environmental groups, Health and Environment
 Alliance and Health Care Without Harm Europe, has found that if the 
European Union’s current emission reduction goals of 20% by 2020, 
compared to 1990 emission levels, were increased instead to 30%, the 
cleaner air would result in significant health benefits.
The 
report states that the correspondingly lower rates of absenteeism, 
sickness and mortality could amount to annual savings of up to €30 
billion. This cost savings would also pay for approximately two-thirds 
of the additional emission reduction expenses.
