As reported on July 24, 2011, a study by international scientists has found that global warming in the Arctic is now releasing harmful chemicals such as the banned pesticide DDT as well as lindane and chlordane, with concerns for their effect to both marine life and humans.

Sri Lankan Buddhist monk and parliamentarian, Ven Athureliya Rathana, led a peaceful protest on July 21, 2011 to raise awareness about the dangers of arsenic pesticides, whose contamination in waterways has resulted in some 20,000 hospitalizations for suspected pesticide poisoning.
