Canadian Parliament Member speaks candidly on global warming.
Recently, Parliament Member Glen Pearson of the Liberal Party of Canada gave a presentation on “An Inconvenient Truth,” the engaging lecture designed by Nobel Peace Prize-winning environmentalist Al Gore, on the dire climate changes occurring around the world.
Glen Pearson, Parliament Member, Canada (M): It’s increasing; you can’t deny it.
You can see that precipitation around the globe is going to increase in many areas. The two hardest hit areas are going to be Canada and Russia. During all of those 160,000 years hardly any species loss. And just in the last couple of decades, look what we’ve done.
VOICE: Glen Pearson and his wife recently adopted 3 children from Darfur, Sudan. He thus brought to the presentation first-hand information on environmental refugees based on his families’ frequent visits to the region.
Glen Pearson MP (M): This is Lake Chad. You see it starts in 1963. Just in that period of time it was gone. We were in South Sudan this year; we found 100,000 Darfur refugees who suddenly just showed up at our doorstep because they had no water. They weren’t fleeing persecution or war. They had nothing to live on.
VOICE: Following his speech, Mr. Pearson answered a question on curbing the meat industry to help reduce devastating global warming effects such as these. He stated that a main source of this solution lay in the voice of citizens.
Glen Pearson MP (M): The [meat] industry is so strong and the lobby is so strong, that’s where the real difficulty is coming from. I think people have been talking about this in Ottawa; we’ve been hearing about it. My wife became a vegetarian at the Earth Summit in 1992. Should we determine that these are things that we want to do something about, what political party is going to tackle that particular lobby group? If people come to us and give us these things and say, “We want you to take action on this,” this is how we know as a party we can’t get away with it.

Florida, USA faces climate change.
According to two separate studies conducted by scientists at universities in the coastal peninsula state, the region is forecast to be greatly affected by rising sea levels and more intense hurricanes. Dr. Julie Harrington of Florida State University said, “The impacts of climate change on Florida's coasts and on our economy will be substantial, persistent and long-term, even under our conservative estimates.” The researchers are recommending long-term adaptive measures to protect lives and property in the state.
Dr. Harrington and colleagues, we appreciate your diligent studies and care for people’s well-being. May your suggestions be heeded to ensure residents’ safety as humanity meanwhile adopts sustainable lifestyles to preserve the pristine beauty of Florida and all other coastlines in the world.

Accelerated destruction found in the Amazon rainforest.
Brazilian Environment Minister Carlos Minc has reported that according to Brazil's National Institute for Space Research, this year’s Amazon deforestation rate is three times higher than last year. Greenpeace Amazon representative Paulo Adario said along with illegal logging practices, the global food shortage has driven farmers toward clearing more land for uses such as animal feed soybean production and cattle grazing.
Minister Minc and Brazil, we deeply appreciate this alarming insight into some of the related effects of our world’s food shortage. We pray that everyone soon realizes the benefits of the meat-free diet in bringing a flourishing future for ourselves and the life-giving Amazon.

Scottish haggis production falls due to diseased sheep.
The Agricultural College Veterinary Investigation Centre reports that warmer winters in Scotland due to global warming along with reduced medication usage by Scottish farmers has caused a sharp increase in a sheep airway disease called lungworms. When the disease is detected, the infected internal organs are deemed unfit for consumption; thus, production of haggis has decreased accordingly.
We thank the researchers at the Scottish Agricultural College for alerting the public to this potential health risk. May we quickly expand our compassion to all of God’s creations and enjoy a plant-based diet to ensure the balance of our Earth and all of her inhabitants.
