Primeval ice melts in Finnish Lapland

Ancient ice cave melting in Finland. Geologist Aimo Kejonen of the Geological Survey of Finland, who has been studying a cave situated in the Finnish Lapland province for the past twenty years, has found its interior ice layer to be melting. He attributes recent mild winters to the watery demise of a primeval ice layer that dates back to the Little Ice Age 500 to 1,000 years ago.

Coating helps solar panels soak up more of the sun

Reflective coating boosts solar efficiency. Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York, USA have developed a material that allows the surfaces it coats to harvest over 96% of the solar energy rather than 66% garnered through existing solar panel technology today. The coating, which contains seven layers of porous material, boosts the panels’ efficiency by retaining a more complete spectrum of sunlight colors as well as harvesting the illumination from every angle.

EU launches Alpine flora and fauna protection plan

Program to protect flora and fauna of the Alps initiated. Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland, as well as 16 other member and non-members states of the European Union, are participating in the Europe-wide EcoConnect project. This program is dedicating an initial US$4 million over a three-year period to collaboratively evaluate the impact of human activities on the environment and find ways to protect the 30,000 animal species and 13,000 plant species throughout the European mountain range. We laud your noble initiatives, European Union and all EcoConnect participants. May the flora and fauna of our Earth forever flourish under such benevolent care.

Boris Johnson unveils plan to create 2,012 new vegetable gardens in London

Project launched to grow veggies in UK. London mayor Boris Johnson announced the launch of the “Capital Growth” initiative that sets a goal of 2,012 plots of land growing food all across London in time for the 2012 Olympic Games. Londoners will be given financial and practical help in identifying and cultivating unused spaces, including rooftops, in the city.

Religious Alliance Launches To Tackle Climate Change

Australia’s religious alliance addresses global warming as a moral imperative. A wide spectrum of religious groups, including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists and Baha'is gathered at the al-Ghazzali Centre in Sydney for Islamic Sciences and Human Development to inaugurate the Australian Religious Response to Climate Change (ARRCC).
