National Climate March in London, United Kingdom. Between 4,000 and 5,000 British citizens participated in a peaceful rally one week ago on December 6 to urge world leaders toward faster action on climate change. The procession that ended at the United Kingdom Parliament was part of a 70-country event. Demonstrators: We want green power!

VOICE: Despite the chilly weather, people of all ages joined in, holding banners and signs calling for green energy, the halting of agro-fuel expansion, and the significant solution of going vegan. Also present to voice their concern about animal agriculture, which accounts for 18 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions, were groups including Viva, Animal Counts, and the Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association.

The message has been made clear – that halting climate change is at the top of the agenda, and the world expects no less than boldest measures to ensure it. Israel gets first plugs for all-electric car network Tel Aviv is key hub for Project Better Place, which has global plans

Israel unveils electric car infrastructure. The first 10 electric recharging stations have been inaugurated in Tel Aviv by US-based Project Better Place, which is assisting Israel in creating 100,000 stations by 2010. Planned for placement every 25 miles, these plug-in spots are intended to support the introduction of electric cars in 2011 from an alliance that has been formed with automaker Renault-Nissan.

Already Denmark has adopted a similar model and hopes to have wind-generated electric cars launched nationwide by 2011. Kudos, Israel, for your exemplary leadership in sustainable transportation. We look forward to seeing many such eco-friendly vehicles for people’s clean travel and comfort.

Surface-Level Ozone Pollution Set To Reduce Tree Growth 10% By 2100
 
Fossil fuel use indirectly affects tree growth. Current levels of ground level ozone have been noted to be four times greater than in pre-industrial times. This high concentration is responsible for a 7 percent decrease in tree growth since the late 1800s according to a recent study published in the scientific journal Global Change Biology.

Study author Dr. Victoria Wittig said that continued reliance on fossil fuels would likely cause the ozone to double, with tree growth being further reduced. Many thanks, Dr. Wittig and colleagues, for this alarming information that highlights our need to develop sustainable energy sources for the protection of the life-giving trees of our Earth.
 
EU Passes New Climate Directive

European Union passes climate measure. The European Union has approved the Renewable Energy Directive, a policy that requires member states to achieve mandatory goals that ensure that the European Union reaches an overall goal of 20 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and 20 percent sustainable sources by 2020, along with 10 percent from alternative fuels.

This new standard is expected to encourage new technologies bring improved access to the energy grid, with spurring of new developments worldwide.
