On Friday, August 13, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in northern Iraq promised a unilateral ceasefire until at least September 20 in honor of the holy month of Ramadan.
President of the autonomous Kurdish region, Mr. Massoud Barzani, and imprisoned PKK leader Abdulla Ocelan were among those calling for the provisional peace.
PKK spokesperson Bouzan Teken affirmed that this decision could be the start of resolving more than two decades of conflict as he stated, "We believe that a ceasefire at this time might have positive results towards developing a political and peaceful solution.”
Kurdistan Workers’ Party members, our sincere thanks for your gesture of peace. Wishing the gentle-hearted people of Kurdistan and Turkey the blessings of harmonious relations in the holy month of Ramadan, and beyond.
