Los altos precios de los alimentos que hicieron estallar mortales disturbios por alimentos en el mundo en el2008 que fueron debido a una combinación de cambio climático y aumento en la demanda para alimentar a los animales de poblaciones en India y China. El númbero de personas que sufren de hambre excedieron los 1.000 millones por primera vez en el2009.20
