Unsettling evidence of climate change from Arctic lake.
New research conducted by scientists from several US and Canadian universities evaluated sediment core from an Arctic lake that provided climate information for the past 200,000 years – going back in time more than twice as far as previous data sources.

From the core samples, the research team was able to ascertain that the 20th century is the only period during the past 200 millennia that is becoming increasingly warm, even though the tilt of the Earth's axis at this time would normally lead to climatic cooling.

Dr. John Smol, a distinguished Canadian biologist from Queen's University who participated in the study concluded that the Arctic lake data contains a warning to humanity.

He stated, “This historical record shows that we are dramatically affecting the ecosystems on which we depend. We have started uncontrolled experiments on this planet, and we have entered unchartered territory.
The situation is far worse than we thought, and this is only the beginning.” Dr. Smol and Canadian and US colleagues, we are grateful for your research that so clearly highlights our current global plight.
