Concluding a mission launched in 2001 by then-President Nelson Mandela, 700 South African troops have begun to withdraw from Burundi, with a scheduled September completion.
The soldiers were originally dispatched following the country’s civil war, to help protect returning Hutu leaders
and provide stability during the formation of the country’s transitional government.
South Africa’s Cabinet commended the returning soldiers for their role in helping restore peace to the central African nation.
We join in salute, South African soldiers and South Africa, for your peaceful presence and a job well done.
Wishing you and the Burundi people many happy days enjoyed in tranquility.
