Interview with Supreme Master Ching Hai by Hippy Gourmet TV show.

As the general public in the US and many other countries show increasing interest in healthier and sustainable living, many find these two values converging through vegetarianism. In light of these trends, television producer James Ehrlich recently invited Supreme Master Ching Hai as a guest to discuss the benefits of the vegetarian diet, especially in light of the global climate change crisis. James Ehrlich is the director of “The Hippy Gourmet” television show, a popular cooking series on multi-cultural natural cuisine filmed in northern California, USA and reaching millions of homes each week.

James Ehrlich, Executive producer and director of “The Hippy Gourmet” television program (M): We understand that you’re advocating for people to move to 100% vegan, vegetarian diet so as to reduce the methane and therefore global warming gases. And the question is, how do you feel that it will work to convince, let’s say, first, Western cultures who have been raised to crave the consumption of meat?

Supreme Master Ching Hai: We must change our attitude; we must change our thinking because we have to ask ourselves, What is important now? Life or just the palate, the taste? The world’s survival or our habit? Which one we must choose. Besides, there are so many hungry people, including children and babies around the world.
 
So, I think, if we have the fortune to have food on the table, and even so tasty, nutritious, guilt-free, bloodless, we should thank God, we should be grateful already. Why must we kill to live? Especially now, we would even kill ourselves if we continue the meat-eating habit. It’s difficult, I do understand that, from suddenly change into a different lifestyle but it’s a better lifestyle, by all means. And, where there is a will, there is a way. The public must be informed more about our urgent, present, clear danger, and the consequences of the meat diet, in terms of fatality to health and world survival.

German TV reports on vegetarian trend.

 The World Vegetarian Congress, held this week in Dresden, was covered by Germany’s national television network, Channel 1. The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association in Germany, along with many animal protection and environmental organizations, were present to bring information to attendees on the multi-faceted benefits of a vegetarian, meaning animal-free diet.


Reporter: Today, in Germany, about 10% of the citizens are said to have stopped eating meat. The Congress wants to make the connections transparent between animal protection, a healthy diet, hunger in the Third World, and climate change, one of the relevant topics nowadays, since 18 % of all greenhouse gases are produced by livestock.

Thomas Schönberg, Chairman of the Vegetarian Union in Germany: We are trying to offer a way for the positive development of the society, and I think that here in Germany, this trend is already there, as meat consumption has already decreased by 15% since 1988.

We are grateful, Channel 1, for your coverage in bringing to light the ways that going veg can save the planet. May media everywhere advocate for a sustainable, plant-based diet to maintain the equilibrium of our ecosphere.
