With studies showing that alcohol consumed at any time during a mother’s pregnancy can cause damage to the fetus’ brain, British psychiatrist and fetal alcohol syndrome expert Dr. Raja Mukherjee of St. Georges Hospital warns that the only safe level is to not drink at all.

The United Kingdom Department of Health also advises women to refrain from alcohol when trying to conceive and when expecting a child. Fetal alcohol syndrome can result in physical, social and mental disabilities, with about one in 100 children estimated to be affected in the United Kingdom alone.

Dr. Mukherjee and fellow researchers, many thanks for your further illumination of alcohol’s dangers. May expectant mothers worldwide remain intoxicant-free for the vibrant well-being of the innocent and cherished unborn.
