A study led by Dr. Imran Sulaiman (MD) in Ireland found that a 2004 nationwide ban on smoking in the workplace has led to reductions in respiratory illnesses, which in turn has resulted in significantly fewer emergency room admissions compared to before the ban went into effect.
The researchers also found a significant decrease in cardiopulmonary disease and noticeable decreases in hospital admissions related to asthma and acute coronary syndrome.
Many thanks, Dr. Sulaiman and colleagues and bravo Ireland for these encouraging facts that highlight the benefits of public smoking bans. May more countries enact such policies for the protection of precious lives across the globe.
