The one secret to saving the planet.

Throughout all civilizations, vegetarianism has been central to codes of conduct such as the Ten Commandments of Christianity and the Buddhist precepts. Far from being a limitation on human behavior, the animal-free basis for these guidelines is instead the secret way to a peaceful and trouble-free life. During a discussion with our Association members in Auckland, New Zealand, Supreme Master Ching Hai further explained why vegetarianism is key to all other commandments, or precepts.

Videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai
with Auckland Center, New Zealand – August 19, 2008

Our Association member (F): What secrets or mysteries or technologies have yet to be revealed that will help save our planet? Thank you, Master.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Yes, there is one secret: the vegetarian diet. (applause)

Our Association member (F): Thank you, Master.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: Vegetarian diet, it contains many things. It’s a very simple solution but it contains most of the principle, goodness in life, I tell you, it contains all the 5 precepts in there. The first precept, “Thou shalt not kill.” If we are vegetarian, we don’t even kill indirectly. Nobody will kill for us. The second is, “Thou shalt not tell lie,” but tell the truth.

If you are vegetarian, you are true to yourself, and true to the law of the universe. We don’t take other lives to sustain our life. The third, you shall not steal. By being a vegetarian, we also keep that precept as well, automatically, because we don’t steal another life. That is the worst thing, to steal. And we do not steal the extra food that could be used to feed 800 plus millions of hungry people, because of the meat diet. So that is the greatest stealing.

Not only we steal the animals’ lives, we steal the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world who could not afford food because the food has been all fed to the animals, and they have to sell even their food, to feed the animals to the richer countries. If you eat meat maybe you also became less of the human quality, and then maybe you could even commit adultery or sexual misconduct due to the animals’ influence of meat.

And the last one is intoxicants. Even meat makes you addictive. It’s another kind of drug. Because people eat meat; they also cannot digest very well. So they need wine, alcohol, to get more appetite, and to digest easily. And then wine, alcohol, also intoxicants, and then lead them to another kind of unlawful act, like drunken driving. So meat can even lead people into another kind of intoxicant, doubling its effect, and drive the man or woman crazy and make them do a lot of things that they will regret for the rest of their life. So if just keep a vegetarian diet, you keep all the precepts.  That’s why I told you, the only mystery is the vegetarian diet.

VOICE: The secret is out – and going Veg is In! We are grateful to Supreme Master Ching Hai for helping us better understand the breadth and depth of the power of the vegetarian diet. Without further ado, may we take the present opportunity to use this valuable knowledge – and simple practice – to save our Earth.

Please tune in to Supreme Master Television’s Between Master and Disciples at a later date for the broadcast of this videoconference with Supreme Master Ching Hai, with multi-language subtitles.

Australia study reveals another threat to marine life from climate change.

Recent research lead by Dr. Jane Williamson, an Australian marine ecologist of Macquarie University, has shown that global warming is not only affecting the shells of marine animals, making them thinner and more fragile, it is also decreasing marine life’s ability to successfully produce offspring. The ocean’s rising temperatures and acidity are especially difficult for those that lay eggs in open water, with the few that are expected to survive having a reduced chance of living to the independent larval stage. Dr. Williamson said, “It could be enough to tip an ecosystem shift. Whole communities of marine animals could disappear.”

We are most grateful for your urgent information, Dr. Williamson and colleague contributors. May all nations turn toward the convenient and healthy vegetarian diet as the most effective means to quickly restore both land and sea ecosystems.
