Climate change puts marine mammals in danger of extinction.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, UK have found that as sea temperatures increase, some 80% of the habitats of whale, dolphin, and porpoise species will be affected, forcing most of them to have to find new homes.

This, in turn, seriously raises their risk of extinction, as suitable areas are very limited. For example, there are no alternate large areas that will accommodate white-beaked dolphins’ need for shallow waters. Researcher Colin MacLeod stated, “In the past, the main concern was for the small number of polar species likely to be affected by a decline in sea ice. This new study shows that there are many more species to be worried about.”

Many thanks, University of Aberdeen scientists, for this alarming information that foretells the climate refugees of the oceans. We pray that humanity quickly heeds the call toward more caring lifestyles to help protect our precious co-inhabitants on both land and sea.

In a December 2008 videoconference with dignitaries and the media in California, USA, Supreme Master Ching Hai, ever concerned for our planet’s fragile state, explained humanity’s role of highest stewardship in protecting the animals.
We have to protect the animals because that means protecting our great Self. Because our great Self is love, our true Self is compassion. If we do not protect the animals, that means we are damaging, ruining, depleting, harming our true Self, which is love, which is noble, which is compassion. That’s what it is.Protect others means protect us. Protect animals means we’re growing in greatness. We recognize again our great Self.

Bringing bumblebees back to the UK.

As part of a partnership between Natural England, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and bee protection organization Hymettus, a rare short-haired bumblebee species that has not been seen since 1988 is being brought from New Zealand back to its native England.

Saying that drastic action is needed to aid the bees’ recovery, Poul Christensen, acting chairman of the environmental
organization Natural England, said, “Bumblebees play a key role in maintaining food supplies – we rely on their ability to pollinate crops and we have to do all we can to provide suitable habitat and to sustain the diversity of bee species.”

Our gratitude, Mr. Christensen, Natural England, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and Hymettus for your devoted work in rescuing the short-haired bumblebee. We look forward to their flourishing numbers gracing a restored countryside across the land.

Conference in Mexico highlights consequences of global warming.

In March, the state of Veracruz hosted a videoconference on climate change in the city of Xalapa, inviting Supreme Master Ching Hai to speak as the guest of honor. For this week’s Environment Expo 2009, the Veracruz government once again cordially invited Supreme Master Ching Hai to speak at a live radio and television-broadcast conference, “Let’s Make the Change – Protect the Environment.” Although she was unable to attend in person due to her busy schedule, Supreme Master Ching Hai graciously provided a comprehensive video message conveying her concern for Mexico in addressing global warming. The following is an excerpt.

Supremem Master Ching Hai: Desertification is another climate change effect that is linked to livestock, again. For example, in Mexico, recent research stated that 47% of your country had already taken the toll of desertification, and has become desert, due to damage from the cattle industry, you see. And another 50-70% of the country of Mexico is also suffering from some degree of drought.

Overgrazing by livestock, which occupies nearly a third of our Earth’s land surface worldwide, is a major cause of desertification and other damages, and is responsible for more than 50% of land erosion. Now, we must stop livestock grazing to protect our soil and protect our life.

VOICE: Mr. Alonso Domínguez Ferráez, Veracruz state’s General Coordinator of Environment Social Development and Environment Bureau, expressed his appreciation for Supreme Master Ching Hai’s inspiring influence in reminding of these noble goals.

Mr. Alonso Domínguez Ferráez - Veracruz state’s General Coordinator of Environment Social Development and Environment Bureau (M): Only with a participating society, using the example of Master Ching Hai as a distinguished member of the society, important things can be done; from having a clear vision of a good society to a commitment to the environment.

VOICE: Our gratitude to the Veracruz government, organizers, other media members and all participants of this conference for your forward-thinking initiatives towards solving our urgent planetary crisis. We also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her loving care and wise counsel regarding climate change. Blessed be our Earth and all inhabitants as people worldwide turn to the lifesaving vegan choice. Please tune in to Words of Wisdom for a full rebroadcast of this conference at a later date, with multi-language subtitles.
