A study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society shows that bugs have diverse personalities  ranging from bold, explorative and daring, to retiring and shy.

Hungarian lead author, Enikő Gyuris of the Behavioral Ecology Research Group at the University of Debrecen, Hungary, was part of a team that conducted personality tests on firebugs by presenting them with different situations such as new objects to explore.

In observing as well as timing each of the bug’s reactions, the scientists found among other things that long-winged firebugs tended to be bolder than their short-winged counterparts and that females in general were more extreme in their responses.

Researcher Gyuris said, "I think nearly every individual -- insects and other organisms alike -- has his or her own personality…”  What an interesting study!

Thank you researcher Enikő Gyuris and University of Debrecen associates for this fascinating research that reveals the diverse and lively personalities of our insect friends.

As we understand more about the remarkable traits of these and all sentient co-inhabitants, may we offer them only our care and respect.
