German assists Tonga in mitigation on climate change

Germany aids Tonga in mitigating climate change. Germany has pledged to donate nearly US$4.1 million to the Pacific island nation of Tonga to help in addressing climate change. This is part of a regional project to help Pacific island communities, including Fiji and Vanuatu, nations that are also very vulnerable to such effects as rising sea levels. In addition, the country plans to share her expertise in such areas as wind and solar technologies. Germany, our appreciation and Heaven bless your dedicated efforts to assist brethren in the Pacific islands with this urgent matter of our time. May their peoples be protected as we work swiftly to better care for our shared planetary home.

New population of Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys found

Rare monkey rediscovered. As a result of intensive hunting and deforestation, the 200 known remaining Tonkin snub-nosed monkeys have been listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. A recent discovery by biologists of Fauna & Flora International lends hope as a new population of 20 monkeys have been found living in the remote forests of northern Âu Lạc (Vietnam), with three infants in the group indicating signs of growth. Kudos Fauna & Flora International for your dedicated efforts to protect the unique Tonkin snub-nose monkey. May we strive to safeguard our precious environments so that rare animal friends such as these can flourish once more.

Colombia Calls Cocaine Users

Cocaine use destroys Colombian rainforest. As part of the country’s Shared Responsibility project, Colombia’s Vice President Francisco Santos Calderón is meeting with representatives in the illegal drug’s top consuming countries to raise awareness of its environmental consequences. Every gram of cocaine produced destroys 4.4 square meters of rainforest, with 300,000 hectares of rainforest overall being lost each year to cocaine production. We express our sincere thankfulness, Your Excellency, for calling attention to this globally shared and impacting issue. May your efforts help lead to the vanishing of harmful substances as these, for the restored health of both humans and the precious rainforest.

EU project averts flooding, inundation in Pondy

India – Europe partnership prevents flooding. A six year collaborative project between the European Commission and India’s territory of Puducherry has been successful in implementing measures to relieve the area of flooding effects. Thanks to silt removal in 84 lakes along with the clearing of irrigation canals, 80 percent of the region’s villages remained flood-free this monsoon season, even in the face of recent Cyclone Nisha, thus sparing lives and saving crops. These lakes also provide water for needed irrigation during dry times as well as helping replenish underground aquifers. Wow, what an eco-accomplishment! Our green salute, European Commission and Puducherry residents for this successful project that has helped maintain the Earth’s balance while benefiting many lives.
