Human-made toxins may leave marine animals stranded.

Hundreds of volunteers recently arrived at Cape Town’s Kommetjie Beach in South Africa to try and save 55 whales that had become beached there. While they managed to return some to the sea, many came back and re-beached themselves. In the end, scientists euthanized over 40 of the whales, and later found that none had likely survived.

Looking for clues to this mysterious behavior, US scientist Eric Montie of the University of South Florida has evaluated animals that had lost their lives. He found that the fluid surrounding the brains of beached marine mammals contained high levels of human-made chemicals. Dr. Montie stated that these chemicals could pass into the animals’ central nervous systems and impair sensory functions such as hearing, which is key to their navigation and thus their survival. Our hearts are filled with sorrow at this tragic loss.

We thank Dr. Montie and all the dedicated volunteers for their caring efforts to understand and save the whales. Let us strive similarly to restore their environment so that they and all beings can lead healthy lives in the birthright of their natural habitats.

During an international gathering in August 2008, Supreme Master Ching Hai spoke with insight and concern for the welfare of the magnificent marine mammals, offering as well a human solution for their plight.

Supremem Master Ching Hai: So many whales and dolphins, they wash up ashore and die. There is so many dead zone in the ocean.It’s suffocating them, so they have to Swim out of the water where it’s full of the poisonous gas that has been released! They cannot bear it,
they cannot breathe. So they have to get out of it.

They stay in the ocean, they die,they come out, they die. There is no choice for them.
This is the worst of all cruelty, that the people don’t take care of the environment, and let all beings keep dying like this. Be vegetarian, how difficult can it be?
Even the dolphins have to swim out of the ocean,because they think like that they can survive, even risking their lives, so why not we can just change to vegetarian diet?

High-level forum for global energy efficiency.

The International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation (IPEEC) was officially launched last week by energy ministers from the G8 member nations of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia,the United Kingdom, and the United States. China, India, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico will also be a part of the organization.

Among the partnership’s many objectives are the sharing of best practices for energy efficiency, and working to reduce global warming. US Energy Secretary Steven Chu said of the new entity, “It will facilitate greater cooperation on our shared goals: a healthier planet and a stronger global economy.”

Kudos, Secretary Chu and all participating energy leaders on the establishment of this green collaborative effort! May we as individuals also do our best to reduce energy consumption for the benefit of our ecosphere.

Mexican President pledges to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

Mexico City was the official host city of this year’s United Nations’ World Environment Day on June 5. At the ceremony marking the day that encourages political action for the planet, Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon promised to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions by 50 million tons per year. His plans include an annual planting of 200,000 hectares of trees, saving energy in the building and transportation sectors, and protecting five new biodiverse areas.

While supporting these laudable and needed endeavors, Supreme Master Ching Hai has shown a way to prioritize climate change actions. The most urgent is a large-scale shift to an organic vegan diet, which could significantly and quickly reduce emissions.

This was once more emphasized in a video greeting to the audience attending the live conference coinciding with World Environment Day in Mexico. It was hosted by the Veracruz state government, whohad cordially invited Supreme Master Ching Hai as the honored guest and speaker.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: If everyone in the world would adopt this simple but most powerful practice of an animal-free diet, then we could reverse the effect of global warming in no time. We would then have time to actually be able to adopt longer-term measures such as more green technology, to also remove the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

In fact, if we neglect to stop meat production, either all these green efforts will be cancelled out in effect, or we may lose the planet before we even having a chance to install any green technology such as the wind power or solar power, or more hybrid cars, for that reason.

I truly appreciate your sincerity and willingness to join with those who share the same goal, for taking initiatives to inform the public, and  for wanting to implement prompt actions.
