세계보건기구(WHO)가 최소 13개국에서 공식적으로 확인한 돼지독감 희생자와 705건에 이르는 많은 확인된 사례들과 함께 정부와 건강관리 전문가들은 현재 아프리카와  남극 대륙을 제외한 모든 대륙에서 확인된 돼지-조류-인간 혼합형 독감의 위협을 최소화하기 위해 신속히 대응하였습니다.

독일 독감 전문가 게오르그 보겔 교수는 신속한 진단이 독감치료에 결정적인 요인임을 강조하였습니다. 돼지 독감에 특효가 있진 않지만, 신속한 검사는 진단에 매우 유용해 일반적인 독감을 즉시 찾을 수 있습니다. 신속한 진단을 받고 타미플루와 같은 약물치료를 받는 사람들은 6시간에서 8시간 내에 체열이 떨어지는 개선반응을 보이고 있습니다. 독감을 피하기 위한 예방 조치로는 손을 자주 씻고, 기본적인 위생을 잘 실천하는 것입니다.

항공 여행자들의 돼지 독감 검사를 위해 케냐와 모로코 정부는 승객의 검열기계장치는 물론 노동자를 위한 보호 조치도 실행하였습니다. 튀니지는 국내에 들어오는 사람들이 열이 있는지 확인하기 위해 열 감지기를 설치하였으며 독일 항공사 루프트한자 등은 내과의사들이 멕시코에서 오는 비행기에 탑승할 것이라고 발표하였습니다.

돼지 독감 바이러스의 일반적인 위험과 원인에 대해 좀 더 알고자 수프림 마스터 텔레비전은 영국의 국제적인 채식주의자 동물보호 단체(VIVA)의 이사인 동물학자 줄리엣 겔라트레이를 인터뷰하였습니다. 겔라트레이 이사는 H1N1 바이러스 같은 질병의 위험을 증가시키는 공장식 농장의상황을 상사하게 전하였습니다.

줄리엣 겔라트레이(여성): 잔혹함은 제외하고도 공장식 농장의 커다란 문제점 중의 하나는 많은 동물들을 최소의 공간에 몰아 넣는다는 것입니다. 그런 불결한 상황에서는 미생물들이 야생의 산불처럼 퍼지게 됩니다. 젖소, 돼지, 닭, 칠면조 같은 동물들이 겪는 다른 문제점은 그들이 선택적으로 사육되어 유전자가 야생동물보다 훨씬 더 약하게 변한다는 것입니다. 그래서 만약, 한 동물이 미생물, 예를 들어 박테리아에 감염된다면, 많은 이를 통해 퍼질 가능성이 있습니다. 분명 이것은 조류독감의 사례처럼 하나의 우려가 되어왔고 현재 가장 우려되고 있는 것은 최근 화제가 되는 돼지 독감입니다. 하지만 영국과 다른 곳에서 돼지들을 계속 가두어 기른 것을 보아왔던 저에게는 새로운 병이 나나타는 것은 놀라운 일이 아니며 틀림없이 앞으로도 공장식 사육 동물에게서 또 나타날 것입니다.

With swine flu victims officially confirmed by the World Health Organization in at least 13 nations and the number of confirmed cases reaching 705, governments and health care practitioners have responded rapidly to minimize the threat of this combined swine-bird-human flu that has now been confirmed on all continents except Africa and Antarctica.

German flu expert Professor Georg Vogel has emphasized that rapid diagnosis is critical in treating the flu. While not specific to the swine flu, a quick test is widely available for diagnosis that can detect general influenza instantly. Patients who are quickly diagnosed and receive treatment in the form of medications such as Tamiflu tend to experience improvement with fevers diminishing in six to eight hours. Preventative measures to avoid the flu include frequent hand washings and other basic practices of good hygiene. 

To aid in swine flu detection for air travelers, governments such as Kenya and Morocco have implemented protective measures for workers as well as passengers’ screening mechanisms. Tunisia has installed thermal detectors to identify people coming into the country who have a fever, while others such as German airlines Lufthansa have announced that medical doctors will travel onboard flights coming from Mexico.

To understand more of the general risks and the origination of the swine flu virus, Supreme Master Television spoke with zoologist Juliet Gellatley, Director of Vegetarians International Voice for Animals (VIVA!) in the United Kingdom. Director Gellatley described the conditions of most factory farms, which increase the risk of diseases such as the H1N1 virus. 

Supreme Master TV: Can you tell us about the disease element in this way of bringing up animals?

Juliet Gellatley (f): One of the huge problems with factory farming aside from the cruelty issues, are that if you cram a lot of animals into the smallest space that you possibly can in dirty conditions, then it allows microorganisms to spread like wild fire.

The other thing with animals like dairy cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys and so forth, is that they have been selectively bred and modified so that their genetics are much weaker than a wild animal.

So that if you get a microorganism, say a bacteria, that infects one animal, it’s likely to spread through the lot.
Obviously this has been one of the concerns for example with bird flu, it’s certainly now a concern with swine flu, which is obviously the hot topic of the day.

But to me the conditions that I’ve seen pigs kept in again and again and again all over the UK and beyond, it is no surprise to me that new diseases will be developing, and this certainly won’t be the last of them that we see from factory farmed animals.
