Minimize food waste to curb effects of climate change. At London’s City Food Lecture this past week, farmer and food industry veteran Lord Christopher Haskins said that in order to alleviate climate change and ensure future food supply, we must stop being wasteful with food. He encouraged people to eat less meat for numerous reasons including: the impact of meat on health, inefficiency of energy derived from animal protein, and the significant contribution animal agriculture has on global warming. World urged to help poor adapt to climate change

United Nations calls on the world to help developing nations prepare for the effects of climate change. The head of United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, called on developed nations to help developing countries adapt to climate change in such ways as foresting coastal areas and training health care professionals. He stated, “There is a global imperative for us to find means by which the worst afflicted regions of the world can be protected.” Our sincere appreciation, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri and the United Nations for urging countries to help each other adapt to the changing climate. Scotland approves third biggest wind farm

Scotland to build new wind farm. Scottish ministers have given their approval for construction of what will be the country’s third largest wind farm. The 68 turbines, located in Perthshire, will supply carbon-free electricity to more than 100,000 homes. The Scottish government has set a goal of generating 50% of electricity from renewable sources by the year 2020, which is well above the 20% required by the European Commission. Delta executive touts green energy

Delta executive in promotes solar energy. At a US Chamber of Commerce Technology committee luncheon in Taipei, Liang Rong-chang, chief technology officer at Delta Electronics Inc., stated that with proper policy initiatives, solar energy could generate 69% of US electricity by 2050 and 100% by 2100. Mr. Liang is optimistic about solar energy as a renewable technology, saying, “Total solar energy irradiated on earth is equal to 10,000 times the earth’s total energy.” Blessed be your optimistic support of this environmentally sound measure, Executive Liang! UK’s Manchester pledges to counteract climate change. The Manchester City Council has allocated almost US$2 million for measures to address global warming. Councilor Neil Swannick, Executive Member for Environment, said, "We have a collective responsibility to reduce the negative impact as far as we are able and everyone has something to contribute. Arroyo calls for unity against global warming 

Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo encourages Filipinos to work together to address global climate change. Speaking at a festival celebrating the wetlands of Candaba, Pampanga, President Arroyo said that Filipinos must band together to protect their 7,000 islands from rising sea levels. She praised recent conservation efforts at Candaba, which, she said, created the "right balance between the needs of the people and the environment."  Ireland cuts way down on plastic bag use

Cloth shopping bags become a new symbol for Ireland. Since taxes were imposed in 2002, Irish shoppers have increasingly switched from plastic to reusable cloth bags. Today, nearly everyone carries a reusable bag wherever they go. Gerry McCartney, a data processor who has switched, said, “The tax is not so much, but it completely changed a very bad habit. Now you never see plastic.” Kudos Ireland for this successful plastic reduction campaign! Thank you all Irish people for your great example in protecting our environment. Scotland invites DiCaprio for green talk. The Scottish parliament has requested an address from Hollywood actor and environmental campaigner, Leonardo DiCaprio, to speak about climate change. Green Party Member of the Scottish Parliament, Patrick Harvie, wrote in his letter, “It would be a great help were you able to speak to other members of the Parliament about the urgency of the threat we face.” Mr. DiCaprio produced, co-wrote and narrated the feature film documentary on climate change, titled, “The 11th Hour.” God bless the Scottish parliament for your concern for our planet’s survival. General Motors introduces hybrid vehicles. General Motors is introducing two hybrid utility vehicles at the Chicago Auto Show. The Sierra is a hybrid pickup truck with 25% better fuel efficiency than previous models. The Denali XT is a prototype with a 50% improvement in efficiency.
