배우 에드베글리가 지금은 채식할 때라고 말합니다.

유명한 배우이자 오랜 환경론자인 에드베글리 주니어가 캘리포니아 산호세에서 열린『실리콘 벨리 친환경 박람회』에서  청중들 앞에서 열렬한 연설을 했습니다. 그는 개인적 솔선을 포함해  지난 수십 년 간의 성공적인 많은 친환경 실천 사례를 인용했습니다.

에드베글리 주니어: 38년전 지구의 날 채식을 시작했습니다. 저는 그 당시 뭔가를 해야겠다는 동기를 얻었습니다. 재활용을 시작했고 퇴비를 만들고 생분해성 비누와 세제들을 구입하기 시작했습니다. 식단을 바꾸어 채식주의자가 되었고 제가 할 수 있는  모든 걸 했죠. 감사합니다! 그리고 세상의 채식인들께 감사합니다. 그분들 덕택에 제가 이 모든걸 할 수 있었어요. 만족합니다.

It’s time to go veg, says US actor, Ed Begley, Jr.

Renowned actor and longtime environmentalist, Ed Begley, Jr. spoke before an enthusiastic audience at the “Green Fair Silicon Valley” in San Jose, California. He cited numerous examples of successful environmental initiatives over the last several decades, including his personal ones.

Ed Begley, Jr.: I started it 38 years ago, 1970, the first Earth Day. I was motivated to do something. I was there; I started recycling; I started composting; I started buying all biodegradable soaps and detergents; I changed my diet; I became vegetarianhttp://suprememastertv.tv. did everything that I could to be… Thank you! Some vegetarians out there.  And I did all this stuff… Thank you. And it felt good…

VOICE: Mr. Begley granted Supreme Master Television an interview following his rousing speech. We asked him about his thoughts on the vegetarian, meaning animal free diet.

Ed Begley, Jr.: I think we need to move to more a plant-based diet. I think that it is healthier for us; then there is the C02 issue which is substantial with cattle. All of it needs to be taken into account. That is why I have stopped eating cows and sheep and pigs and chickens many years ago.

VOICE: His advice for the public is, as usual, heartfelt and delivered in a straightforward manner.

Ed Begley, Jr.: Even if you are a meat eater, okay, but eat less for God’s sake. Now that there are 6 billion of us on the planet, there isn’t enough room to be doing that. So hopefully a lot of people are waking up to that.

칭하이 무상사:  가장 중요한 건 선진국이든 빈곤국이든  국가간에 평화가 도래한다는 겁니다. 중요한 건 선진국이든 아니든 모두에게 충분한 음식이 있을 거란 거지요. 그리고 모든 동물들이 평화 속에서  두려움이나 고통 없이 살게 될 것입니다. 그것이 핵심이에요. 그리고 우리가 영적인 측면과 기술을 동시에 개발시킨다면 좋을 것입니다. 그러면 균형을 이룰 거예요. 그게 우리가 가질 수 있는 최상의 것이죠.

Envisioning a future developed world – in balance.

In this time of the Earth’s crisis and many complex issues being faced at once, Supreme Master Ching Hai has provided clarity on the most favorable direction to follow.

VOICE: During a candid videoconference with our Association members in Surrey, United Kingdom, Supreme Master Ching Hai answered questions about global warming in the greater context of human development.

(F):If global warming is stopped on time and is reversed, is there a possibility that the poorest and undeveloped countries of the world will be able to catch up on development and reach the same level as developed countries, or will inequality still exist amongst countries?

Supreme Master Ching Hai: It still exists, but they will be helped, by more developed countries.

(F): Yes, Master.

Supreme Master Ching Hai: The main point is, we will have peace between nations, be it developed or not developed. And the main point is, we will have enough food for everyone, developed or not developed. And all the animals will be living in peace, without fear, without suffering; that’s the main point. And it would be good if we also develop spirituality and technology at the same time. Then it would be very balanced. It would be the greatest thing that we can have.

VOICE: Thank you Supreme Master Ching Hai for guiding us toward this bright future for our planet. May all humanity walk together on this ennobling path.

남극의 빙붕이 계속 붕괴됩니다.

남미 남극반도의 윌킨스 빙붕이 더 작아지고 있습니다. 올 5월 30-31일 160제곱킬로가 떨어져 나갔습니다. 이 빙붕은 샤르코와 래터디섬을 연결합니다. 2월에는 얼음판이 6Km 였으나, 5월 사건 후 2.7 Km 로 줄었습니다. 독일 본 대학에 소재한 지표면 원격탐사센터의 마티아스 브라운 박사와 뮌스터 대학 지구물리학 연구소의 앙겔리카 훔베르트  박사는 이렇게 말했습니다. 『남은 판은 가장 좁은 위치에 아치형 균열이 있어서 아마 며칠 안에 연결 부위가 완전히 부서질 것 같습니다.』 

이 중요한 정보를 제공하신 브라운 박사와 훔베르트 박사에게 감사드립니다. 이 같은 지구의 변화가 지구를 구하기 위해 필요한 우리 내면의 변화를 일깨우기를 바랍니다.  

Antarctic ice shelf continues to break up.

The Wilkins Ice Shelf, south of South America on the Antarctic Peninsula is dwindling further. A 160 km² area broke off May 30 to May 31, 2008. This ice shelf connects the Charcot and Latady islands. In February, the plate of ice was 6km. After the May event it is down to 2.7km. Dr. Matthias Braun from Germany’s Center for Remote Sensing of Land Surfaces at Bonn University, and Dr. Angelika Humbert from the Institute of Geophysics, Münster University, said, “The remaining plate has an arched fracture at its narrowest position, making it very likely that the connection will break completely in the coming days.”

사해 수위가 더 내려가고 있습니다.

이스라엘，웨스트 뱅크와 요르단에 접경한 사해가 수량이 계속 감소하는 징후를 보이고 있다고 사해보존 단체인 미쉬마르 하미플라스는 말합니다. 이스라엘 수자원국 데이터를 인용하며 단체는 지난 5월  사해 수위가  10cm 내려갔고 그 전 달에는 8cm 내려갔다고 말합니다. 이것의 원인은 요르단강과 다른 수원에서 물 소비가 증가했기 때문이라고 말하면서 미쉬마르 하미플라스는 사해를 다시 채우는 가능한 해법의 하나로 농업분야에서 물을  효율적으로 사용할 것을 제안합니다.

미쉬마르 하미플라스와 이스라엘 수자원국의 유익한 조사결과에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 세계 시민 모두가 물과 같은 귀중한 지구 자원을 절약하고 현명하게 사용하기를 바랍니다.  

Dead Sea water level is decreasing further.

The Dead Sea, bordered by Israel, the West Bank and Jordan is showing signs of continuing water loss says Mishmar Hamiflas, a Dead Sea conservation group. Citing data from the Hydrological Service of Israel, the group says that this past May the water level in the Dead Sea dropped 10 cm and the month before it dropped 8 cm. Stating that this is likely due to increased water consumption from the Jordan River and other water sources, Mishmar Hamiflas suggests more efficient use of water by the agricultural sector as one possible solution to replenish the Dead Sea. 

We sincerely appreciate your informative findings, Mishmar Hamiflas and Hydrological Service of Israel. May all world citizens conserve and wisely use valuable Earth resources like water.


정부는 지구온난화 해결을 최우선 목표로  삼아야 합니다.

유럽연합 에너지 고문 위원회와 국제 에너지기구(IEA)의 최근 보고서에 의하면 세계의 현 에너지 동향이 계속된다면 지구의 탄소배출량은 유엔 기후변화 정부간 위원회 (IPCC)가 제안한 2050년까지 50-80% 감소를 달성하겠지만, 대신에 2030년까지 57%가 증가할 거라고 합니다. IEA는 IPCC가 제안한  수준으로 온실가스 배출을 줄이는 것은 정부들이 전대미문의 국제적 공동 협력으로 기후변화를 급선무로 다루지 않으면 성취되기 어렵다고 합니다.

즉각적인 조처의 필요성을 세계에 경고하는 IEA의 요구를 지지하며 천국의 은총으로 지구온난화의 신속한 제어란 공동 목표를 향해 우리 모두  협력하길 바랍니다

Governments should focus on global warming as top priority.

A recent report by the European Union’s energy advisory panel, the International Energy Agency (IEA), forecasts that if the world continues along current energy trends, global carbon emissions will increase 57% by 2030, instead of decreasing 50-80 percent by 2050, as recommended by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The IEA states that reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the IPCC’s proposed levels will be unattainable unless governments make climate change the utmost urgent priority with an unparallel degree of international, collective cooperation.
IEA, we join your concerned call in alerting the world to the need for immediate action. With Heaven’s grace, may our steps forward unite in the shared goal of quickly halting global warming.


알래스카 마을 주민이 기후변화로 인한 이주 원조를 받습니다.

뉴톡 마을과 에스키모 주민들 4백 명은 더 안전한 고지대로 이주하기 위해 미국 알래스카 주로부터 3백만 달러를 받습니다. 알래스카의 213개 토착마을 약 86%가 영구적인 빙하 해빙을 겪고 영구 동토층이 가라 앉으며 홍수, 격렬한 폭풍우와 해식을 목격하였으며, 이 중 6개 마을은 주민의 안전을 위해 즉각적인 조치를 취해야 했습니다. 주의 지원을 받아 뉴톡의 유피크 에스키모인들은 이제 더 높고  안전한 지대에  마을을 재건할 수  있게 됐습니다. 정부는 내년에 1천3백만 불을 추가 지원해 취약한 유피크 마을 주민을  보호할 예정입니다.

에스키모 원주민을 돌보는 알래스카 정부에 감사드립니다. 모든 영토가  한 때 우리 조상들이  알았던 초기의 상태로 회복되길 기도합니다. 

Alaskan village receives assistance for relocation due to climate change.

The village of Newtok and its 400 Yupik Eskimo inhabitants are receiving US$3 million from the state of Alaska, USA to help relocate to safer and higher grounds. Of the 213 native villages in Alaska, approximately 86 percent are already seeing melting permanent sea ice, sinking permafrost, flooding, intensifying storms and coastal erosion, with six of the villages having to take immediate action to ensure the safety of their people. With the funding from the state, the Yupik Eskimos of Newtok can now start rebuilding their village on higher and more sheltered grounds. The government is allocating a further US$13 million for the protection of the vulnerable Yupik villages next year.
We thank the Alaskan government for your care of the native Eskimos. We pray all lands are restored to the pristine state that our ancestors once knew.

WWF는 기후 회담이 크게 진보해야  한다고 말합니다.

교토의정서 대체 문제로 독일 본에서 2주간 열린 유엔 회담을 끝맺으면서 국제환경단체 WWF는 기후변화  해결을 위한 국제행동 계획이 훨씬 신속히 진행돼야 한다고 경고했습니다. WWF의  기후정책 조정관  카트린 구트만은『과학은 정부들이  기후변화 제어를  위해 전보다 훨씬 대규모의 행동을 해야 한다고 시사한다』고 말했습니다.

신속한 행동을 촉구한 WWF에  감사드립니다 모든 정부가  당면한 기후 변화의  확실한 위험을  깨닫고 우리 행성을  구하기 위해 속히 행동을 하길 바랍니다. 

WWF says climate talks need more substantial progress.

At the conclusion of the two-week United Nations talks in Bonn, Germany on replacing the Kyoto Protocol, global conservation group WWF warned that progress on developing an international plan of action for climate change needed to move much faster. Kathrin Gutmann, WWF climate policy coordinator said, “The science tells us that governments need to think at a much larger scale of action than ever before to get climate change under control.” 
Our gratitude, WWF, for your call to more rapid action. May all governments recognize the clear and present danger of climate change and quickly carry out actions to save our planetary home. (*)
