겨울에도 북극 빙하가 녹습니다.

극지 관측 센터가 주도한 연구에서 영국 연구원 카트린 가일이 수집한 카트린 가일이 수집한 위성 자료에 의하면 보통 북극의 빙하가 두꺼워지는 계절인 겨울인데도 빙하가 계속 녹고 있다고 합니다. 게다가 녹는 원인이 매우 심상치 않습니다. 기온은 얼음이 얼 정도로 충분히 차지만 겨울에 녹고 있는 빙하는 대부분 온난해진 바닷물이나 해양의 순환이 변했기 때문인 듯합니다. 즉 북극 만년설이 처음 예상보다 더 빨리 사라질 수도 있다는 것입니다.

이 놀라운 발견으로 우리에게 경각심을 일으키는 극지 관측 센터의 가일 박사와 동료 연구원들에게 깊이 감사드립니다. 인류가 지구에서 조화로운 생활을 신속히 회복하여 모든 생명체들이 보존되길 기도합니다.

Arctic is melting even in Winter

Arctic ice now melting even in winter. In a study conducted by the Centre for Polar Observation, satellite data collected by UK researcher Dr. Kathrine Giles has found that the ice has continued to thin during what is normally the winter season for the thickening in the Arctic. Moreover, the cause of the melting is very alarming.

Because the air temperature has been cold enough for the ice to freeze, the thinning ice through the winter is most likely due to warming waters or changes in the circulation of the ocean, meaning that the Arctic ice cap may disappear more quickly than originally predicted. Our sincere appreciation, Dr. Giles and colleagues at the Centre for Polar Observation, for alerting us to these alarming findings. We pray for humanity’s quick return to harmonious living on Earth for the preservation of all her inhabitants.

The E: Mini’s New Electric Car

BMW leads the way with the Mini E. With its United States’ debut set for November 19 at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the new quiet and clean Mini E will be offered initially to 500 business and private customers in the US states of California, New York and New Jersey. Powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor, the Mini E has a range of about 150 miles and can accelerate to a top speed of 95 miles per hour. Kudos, BMW group for the green Mini E! We wish many miles of happy eco-friendly travel for the lucky drivers of this sustainable car.

Mandarin Daily hosts special anniversary celebration. In marking the 60th anniversary of the Mandarin Daily News, the First Lady of Formosa, Chow Mei-ching, wife of President Ma Yin-Jeou, led Taipei elementary school children in reading a news article titled "Curb Global Warming: Eat Less Meat, More Vegetables & Fruits." The First Lady explained to the young students how being a vegetarian can ease global warming as well as other clever ways to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. Such a beautiful example also touches our hearts, First Lady of Formosa! Blessed be children and adults alike in adopting the eco-friendly vegetarian lifestyle to tread ever lighter on our one and only Mother Earth.
