새 유엔 프로젝트가 도미니카 공화국의 농부들을 돕습니다.

유엔 국제농업개발 기금(ＩＦＡＤ)이 지원하는 ３천１백만 불 프로젝트는 도미니카의 １１개 주를 대상으로 하며 이전의 성공적인 지속가능성 프로젝트를 토대로 농부와 시장의 직접 연결을 도울 계획입니다. ＩＦＡＤ 남미와 카리브해 지부장인 조세피나 스터브스는 프로젝트의 부가적 측면을 다음처럼 설명했습니다. 『기후변화 완화와 건실한 환경 경영이 이 프로젝트를 통해 이 프로젝트를 통해 진행될 것이며 경제 개발 과정에서 여성의 중요한 역할이 인정되고 지지될 것입니다.』

지속가능한 무역정책이 열대우림을 돕습니다.

유엔이 설립한 국제열대목재기구(ＩＴＴＯ)는 ５０개 이상의 열대 목재 수출입 국가들로 구성됩니다. 일본 요코하마에서 최근 개최된 제４４회 회의에서 ＩＴＴＯ는 열대국가의 삼림벌채와 토지황폐화 감소를 위한 ３５０만 달러 프로그램과 지속 가능한 사용과 무역을 통한 열대우림 보존 프로젝트를 위한 ５１０만 불 기금을 발표했습니다.

열대우림 보호를 위해 노력하는 국제열대목재기구에 진심으로 감사드립니다. 산소를 공급하고 다채로움을 주는 생명의 나무들로 지구가 계속 아름다워지길 바랍니다.

네팔이 기후변화 행동 계획 수립에 도움을 받습니다.

유엔 개발 계획과 유엔 개발 계획과 영국 국제개발부 덴마크 국제개발처는 총 １백３십만 불 이상을 기부해 네팔 환경 과학 기술부의 계획 수립을 도왔습니다. １８개월 이내에 실행될 것으로 기대되는 이 계획은 유엔 기후변화협약의 기준을 따를 것입니다.

지구 온난화를 멈추기 위한 네팔의 노력을 원조하는 유엔, 영국과 덴마크에 감사드립니다. 모든 정부의 현명한 친환경 공동 노력으로 아름다운 지구 건강이 보호되고 보장되길 바랍니다.

해수면 상승의 새로운 원인이 발견됐습니다.

미국 메인 대학의 기후변화 연구소 과학자들은 남극과 그린란드의 얼음 아래에서 일어나는 빙하 밑 홍수로 빙하의 바다로의 유입이 빨라지고 있음을 발견하였습니다. 이로써 지구 온난화로 인한 해수면 상승의 이미 알려진 요인들의 영향이 배가 되고 그린란드 빙상의 해빙과 같은 긴박한 사건이 일어나 전세계 바다가 ７미터나 상승하게 될 가능성이 부각됩니다. 지구의 위태로운 상황에 대해 경종을 울린 기후변화 연구소 과학자들과 관계자분들께 감사드립니다. 우리 모두의 고향 지구의 모든 존재를 효율적으로 보호할 수 있는 친환경 조치가 신속히 취해지길 바랍니다. 

Kenya: Drought forcing children to quit school.

Kenyan drought causes school attrition. According to the country’s education authorities, prolonged drought and their consequent shortages of food and water at home are causing increased absenteeism of children who must forego their studies to help parents earn a living.

To help alleviate this situation, the United Nations World Food Program has announced plans to implement a school lunch program in the most affected districts. Bravo and many thanks, United Nations World Food Program, for your timely and relevant assistance. We pray for the well-being of all the warm-hearted Kenyan people and that through our more considerate actions, a brighter future will dawn for all.
 
Poor Dominican Republic farmers to win greater access to markets under UN project

New UN project to assist Dominican Republic farmers. Involving 11 provinces in the country, the US$31 million program funded by the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) will build on the success of a previous sustainability project and is intended to help create a direct link of between farmers and markets.

Ms. Josefina Stubbs, IFAD Latin America and Caribbean Director, described additional aspects of the work, saying, “Climate change mitigation and sound environmental management will be woven through this project, which will also recognize and endorse the vital role of women in economic development processes.” Our sincere thanks Director Stubbs and United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development, for your kind support of sustainable growing practices in the Dominican Republic. US$8.6 million in new funds for tropical forests

Sustainable trade initiatives to help tropical forests. Originally established through the United Nations, the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) is comprised of more than 50 tropical timber import and export states. In the ITTO’s recent 44th session in Yokohama, Japan, the organization announced funding for a US$3.5 million program to reduce deforestation and land degradation in tropical countries as well as US$5.1 million for projects that preserve tropical forest resources through sustainable use and trade. International Tropical Timber Organization, we sincerely appreciate your efforts to protect the tropical forests. May our planet continue to be adorned with the vital trees that replenish the atmosphere and provide color to our world.
 
Nepal receives aid to implement climate change convention

Nepal assisted in formulating action plan for climate change. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) have collectively donated over US$1.3 million to help Nepal’s Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology set up the plan. Its structure, which is expected to be implemented within 18 months, will follow the standards of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

We are grateful to the United Nations, United Kingdom and Denmark for your caring assistance in Nepal’s efforts to curb global warming. May the united eco-wise efforts of all governments protect and ensure the health of our beautiful planet.

Floods under Antarctic ice speed glaciers into sea: study

New cause of rising sea levels found. Scientists from the Climate Change Institute at the University of Maine, USA have discovered that sub-glacial floods occurring below ice covers in Antarctica and Greenland are speeding the movement of glaciers into the sea.

This evidence compounds the effect of already-known factors in sea level rise that are caused by global warming. This new effect highlights the urgency of potential events such as the Greenland ice sheet melting, which alone would raise the world’s oceans by a full 7 meters. Climate Change Institute scientists and all others involved, we thank you for sounding this alarm on the fragile state of our Earth.
