싱가포르의 환경 수자원부는 새 에너지 고효율 기술 프로그램 보조금으로 １４７０만 달러를 할당했는데 이는 에너지 효율성 개선을 위한 기업 투자금의 ５０％까지 부담해 프로젝트 당 최대 １３０만 달러를 지원하게 됩니다. 기금의 일부는 중소기업의 친환경 기술 투자 장려를 위해 투자 장려를 위해 비축됩니다.

말레이시아 사바대의 자연재해 연구센터의 펠릭스 통쿨 교수는 최근 대학에서 있은 기후변화의 모델링과 식물에 미치는 영향에 대한 세미나에서 기후변화의 증거들을 발표했습니다. 통쿨 교수는 지난 수십 년간의 말레이시아의 기온 상승, 극심해진 계절풍과 폭풍, 강우량 증가, 심한 가뭄과 삼림 화재 등을 들었습니다. 또한 기후변화로 ２００６년에 비정상적인 계절풍이 초래됐고 극심한 기상이변으로 말레이시아에 대규모의 자연 재해가 발생했다고 설명했습니다.

두바이 자연보호지가 국제적 인정을 받습니다.

아랍 에미리트 연합의 두바이 사막보존지역이 세계 최대 환경 단체인 세계자연보전연맹에 세계자연보전연맹에 가입됐습니다. 이는 아랍 에미리트 연합의 세이크 모하마드 빈 라시드 알 막툼 부통령 겸 총리의 오랜 노력 덕택인데 그는 아랍에미리트 사막기원의 역사와 유적 보존의 중요성을 중시합니다.

사막보존지역은 두바이 영토의 ５％를 차지하며 수많은 사막 식물과 동물의 서식처로 세계 보호 지역 데이터베이스에 등재됩니다. 환경 보존의 업적을 이룬 라시드 알 막툼 총리와 두바이에 진심으로 축하드립니다. 자연보호지역에 대한 헌신적인 보호 노력에 알라의 가호가 있기를 바랍니다. 

Snow In The Arctic: An Ingredient In A Surprising Chemical Cocktail

Arctic atmospheric pollution becoming a global concern. In a recent study conducted by research scientists in France, Arctic snow was found to be releasing significant amounts of nitrogen oxides. These compounds were found to originate in nitrates deposited on the snow cover that had been carried by winds from around the world.

When reacted with solar radiation in spring, the deposited nitrates are converted to nitrogen oxides that are then released into the air, disturbing the atmospheric chemistry. The scientists affirmed that these finding illustrate the need for global involvement to solve environmental dilemmas. Plant Trees to Fight Poverty

Tree planting encouraged in Namibia. Last month’s National Arbor Day was celebrated through a planting of 2,000 trees and donation of a further 15,000 seedlings nationwide. Thousands of trees have already been planted under the government’s “Tree Planting” project, with tree nurseries in all 13 regions of the country having also been established. Minister of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, John Mutorwa is encouraging all Namibians to consider trees in their day-to-day activities for the restoration of livelihoods and nature across the land. Government sets up S$22m grant to help companies go green

Singapore helps companies in going green. The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources in Singapore has allocated US$14.7 million for its new Grant for Energy Efficient Technologies program, which will cover up to 50 percent of companies’ investments in energy efficiency solutions for a maximum of US$1.3 million per project. A portion of the funds is being reserved for small and medium sized businesses to encourage investment in green technologies. Proof of climate change in Sabah

Malaysia and Sabah show many signs of global warming. Professor Felix Tongkul of the Center for Natural Disaster Studies, University Malaysia Sabah (UMS), presented evidence of climate change at the recent Modeling of Climate Change and Its Impact on Vegetation seminar at the university. Among the events he cited included the temperature rise in Malaysia over the decades, increasingly severe monsoon and storms, increased rainfall, more droughts, and forest fires.

The professor stated, "This climate change is thought to have caused the abnormal monsoon in 2006 and have contributed to the extreme weather events responsible for some major natural disasters experienced in Malaysia." We thank Dr Felix Tongkul, and all present at the seminar for your efforts to address the global crisis of climate change. Dubai desert reserve gets protection

Dubai nature reserve gains global recognition. The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) in the United Arab Emirates has joined the world’s largest environmental organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Its acceptance is due to the long-term efforts of His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, who believes it is important to preserve the emirate’s history and heritage of natural desert origins.

The area, which comprises five percent of all of Dubai’s land and is home to a number of desert plant and animal species, is also being listed with the World Database on Protected Areas.
